I am thoroughly convinced that they make this so darn complicated that is how they sell the pay for ones.

Every few months my free AVG virus firewall expires and I have such a wrassle getting the new one installed.

Always get this pop up must do this, puter at risk. So I do it,,,takes hours to download,,,then it says you already have this installed cancell please. GRRR, hours wasted. I quit doing those.

But now I see I have no firewall and protection installed. Twice I went thru the long download ,,,takes over an hour on this slow dial up. get right down to booting the puter to finish download and it says cant do it,somethings wrong. IF only I could print that so I can refer to what it is,,,I click out of it and once gone out of mind.(what mind) Also said to call tech support, yeah right, dont know who that is,it ISNT me!!

I tried a different free version a friend gave me last night. screen says that page isnt available. back to square one. How do you ever get them installed?? And why a big difference,,,the old version worked, like 6.5 or 6.9 ot whatever it was now the 7.5 wont work at all. One time said two problems, next time said one problem. How do I get one installed???

We need more info, what version of Windows are you running (98/98SE/2000/XP Home or Pro etc.), also are you receiving an error message and what is the exact wording?

You need to uninstall any other antivirus program{s) you currently have installed and reboot before installing a different version or different antivirus product.

Also, as far as I know, the free version of AVG does not include a firewall, but I could be mistaken as I have not used it in years.

I much prefer Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic as far as free antivirus solutions go. It has an excellent detection rate.

If you are running XP (hopefully service pack 2 if you keep up with Windows Updates), the Windows firewall is turned on by default and is adequate.

It is also a good idea to clean out your Temp directory once in a while as it becomes "overfilled" with old installation data after a period of time. Always reboot after installing programs or updates, then it's safe to empty the Temp directory which resides in different locations depending on Windows version.

Clear out the contents of your Temp directory then try to install.

1. Navigate inside the users temporary directory.
2. By default if using XP or 2K the directory is located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\, if using Win9x, the location is usually C:\Windows\Temp\.
3. Press control-A to select all files and folders.
4. Press the delete key. (shift+delete bypasses the recycle bin)

Don't want to rub it in Don, well just enough to get a rise out of you so we know you are okay-but I just installed the free AVG virus protection no problem.
Talk to you tomorrow if you're back.
