Hi, I hear you on this. I have called in and tried in NH. Maybe we should just post them ourselves at this point! Not sure if they would take them down or not? Maybe going in person and talking directly with them and asking if you could post things? This could be a summer project for me. Maybe I will do that.

This was done in the county which I live in. Montgomery Co. in the state of Maryland.
The support group I belong to, National Capitial Lyme & Tick Borne Disease Association, got it done. I believe they worked with are county represenitives.
You might contact them at [email protected] and let them khow what you would like to do and they can give you some pointers.
I was in one of our county parks earlier this month and the Lyme awareness sigh was posted along with park regulations.

you might also ask TREEPATROL; that's his area of expertise working in a park.

Some vector control districts are able to get signage going in their area. That might be one way to go, to contact them and ask what they are doing about signage.
Tell them this problem is only going to get worse and that we need to be pro-active.
And that you'd be willing to help, in some way? Maybe meet with them? Go to their board meeting if they have one?

All good ideas. I think getting signs posted is super important as far as prevention or awareness goes.

One idea: just take some May Lyme Disease Awareness month actions - stand at the entrance to hiking trails, of course covered in tick repellent yourself, and hand out notices to hikers, a la:
MAY IS LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH!
Ticks are being found out in nature everywhere now. They can carry Lyme disease and coinfections, etc, etc - what they cause,
how it manifests, what people need to know, how to protect people and pets, some good websites.
You might even want to consider inviting people to contact you for further assistance in alerting your area, with your eyes on the prize of getting formal signage going.

Just a thought from my sleep-deprived Lyme brain,
But I wonder if they'd be more accommodating if you could get local Boy/Girl Scout groups to undertake that as a project.
It seems people are more willing to agree to things like that if the Scouts are involved.
Just make sure they have some good info to back up their reasons for doing it--
I'm sure there's got to be some kind of badge or whatever related to a project like this.

Interesting idea - a badge to be developed for the scouts on tickborne disease awareness and prevention.
If scouts are involved in doing flyering outside, it goes without saying that it will have to be done very carefully so they are protected.
Actually, we could carry this idea further - the Conservation Corps, restoration folks, think who's out there.

Hi, Can we do this as a group? I always feel like when it is just me sending a letter they aren't going to take it seriously. I have written to the Boyscouts and GS about the LDA's "How a tick can make you sick." That is geared toward troops and never heard anything back. I think if they hear from more than one person it has a much bigger impact? Thoughts, ideas on how we can do this together?
Thanks, Ann

Robin come on out and help me pass out tick info on trail heads. You can watch for ticks while I pass out the info and bring a magnifying glass with you. We can stand in buckets of deet using the moat technique. May one we have a play date scheduled.

This organization is signed up to support the congressional bill.
Maybe a well-written/short letter asking if they wanted to do a May project would be good?
They are very concerned and wanted info on prevention.
Tincup, I looked at the hiking site. It's centered in Silver Spring, MD. Have you paid them a visit yet?!
They ought to take up May Lyme Awareness month as their cause, and then extend it on a monthly basis throughout the year...
May plus one month, May plus two months, etc.
Also, I notice that being green gets an attractive billing on the site, as in
"neutralize your travel impact - plan a neutral carbon trip" or something to that effect.
So we need a catchy phrase too, eh? "A different kind of green: prevent Lyme disease"
We need green phrases.

Robin don't forget to pick up the tick out. That was a Freudian slip I meant take out on Calif. St. We can always eat and then pass out leaflets in front of the grocery store while eating magical ice cream that some how has special properties so it does not feed yeast or spirochetes.
A follow Lyme patient has me hooked on sugar lately.
Plenty of hikers stop at the grocery store for supplies so we don't even have to go near any ticks unless you want to come meet my dog. He did not read your above post and often goes off the trail in search of rodents.

Ok, if the trailhead starts at the grocery store, I'll reconsider.
We have to find you some sugarless ice cream.
Tick-out food?! You're as bad as I am. I'll order duck a la TKO Orange.
For everyone else, we hope as many of you who can, to join in doing May Lyme awareness actions, even if it's to go to your local pet store, or garden store, or...? and pass out info.
And if anyone has any further enlightening comments about the question originally asked here, please do.

All hikers show at the store to buy supplies so we can do hand outs there and be surrounded by semi - tick free cement.
If they take the sugar out of the ice cream what fun would that be? Isn't your middle name Sugar? Forget the duck I want the scallops. Maybe get the cute waiter to come along and help us pass out after eating the ice cream I meant to say pass out leaflets - Lyme brain again : - )
