Thursday's paper had an article on Lyme. I broke it up for Neuro Lymies:

**Ulster County leaders step up fight as Lyme disease season takes hold**

By Mid-Hudson News Network

KINGSTON -- Ulster County has begun a campaign to teach the public how to prevent tick bites and treat

Lyme disease.

At a news conference on Tuesday, County Executive Michael Hein said ``Ulster County is a spectacular place

with wonderful outdoor activities, and with just some small preventative steps, we can deal with Lyme

disease and make sure it doesn't affect any more families.''

Dean Palen, the county's public health director, said peak human contact with ticks, which transmit the

disease, takes place from May through July and October through November.

Palen said the county Health Department processed 2,500 lab reports in 2008, of which 553 confirmed cases

of Lyme disease. ``That is, far and away, the highest year we've seen, and we've been keeping statistics

now for about 15 years,'' he said.

Palen urged residents to create tick-free zones around their houses by properly pruning vegetation.

Dr. Marc Tack, an infectious disease specialist in Kingston, said Lyme is a diagnosable, treatable

and curable disease. He noted that the ticks that transmit Lyme are about the size of a poppy seed

when fully engorged, and the longer a tick has time to engorge itself, the greater the chance a person has

of contracting Lyme disease.

Tack said persons who have been bitten by a tick should contact their primary health-care provider

immediately because acting within 36 hours provides the best opportunity to effectively treat Lyme disease

with antibiotics.

David Lundquist, chief executive officer of the company that oversees Kingston and Benedictine hospitals,

said: ``We are aware of what to look for and our emergency rooms are set up to where they can easily pick

it up, diagnose it and treat it.''

Also at the news conference were students from Kingston High School's Students Working and Training

Program, who Palen said played a major role in assisting the efforts of the Lyme Disease Awareness

Campaign by assembling 4,000 of the projected 9,000 tick removal and prevention kits that will be prepared

by the end of the year.
