I read someone's statement on Lymenet recently, where that person believed their food intolerances - specifically gluten, dairy, and nightshades - had been caused by antibiotics.
That got me thinking. I originally had no apparent food intolerances despite 15 years of untreated chronic Lyme.
In retrospect, my food intolerances developed after 2-3 years on antibiotics. At that point, I noticed visible inflammation that I eventually traced to nightshade vegetables.
Now, a couple of years (and more antibiotics) later, it seems my intolerance of gluten has also grown. My hands and feet become visibly inflamed and my nerves feel much more "on fire".
What have your experiences been with antibiotics and food intolerances?

- An irritated gut can cause food intolerance. Infection can cause celiac. But antibiotics can also rip up the stomach. Still, lyme is one of the most serious infections on earth. It must be treated and, often, when abx (antibiotics) are taken, there are certain protective supplements that help.
. . . Leaky gut syndrome may trigger or worsen such disorders as Crohn's disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma. . . . ----------------

well, here is my theory about this: maybe with abx, we stenghten the immune system, which then becomes very hard on any "dangerous" food, thus it does not tolerate many things... that's probably the "autoimmune" part of the disease. I also have the feeling that I developed a lot of food intolerances as well as chemical intolerances because of abx... But the question is., how long after one stops abx does it take to be able to eat "normally" and just smell strong perfume witout feeling bad from it...

I had a lyme friend who developed more and more food intolerances the longer she treated lyme and company.
By the end of her treatment, there were only 5 foods she could tolerate.
It turns out that she could not detoxify. Her lyme doc figured it out in the end. She went to an ayurvedic practitioner who detoxified her over a period of a few months. Then, she was totally fine and was really praising God for it.
She had a rough time throughout her lyme treatment, and at the end we finally found out why. If you can't detoxify, all of the toxins from the dead lyme, babesiosis and bartonella just keep recirculating in your body. You can't clear them. This is very irritative to the body, and it makes you start reacting to many things.
When you are not taking antibiotics, you are not killing germs, so you don't have any problems with the build up of toxins. Instead, you have problems with the diseases.
I know that many meds gave me hives while I was treating lyme. Before I treated lyme, I never got hives. So, it seems to be from an overload of toxins in the body that we start reacting to so many things.
I suggest you try additional detox methods and see if these sensitivities improve.

As far as I know, antibiotics haven't affected my food tolerance, but they do affect my touch/smell/hearing sensitivities. If I forget milk thistle/probiotics/glutathione, I feel awful. Just figured this out yesterday. But, then I'm on a zith/mepron regimen which can be very hard on the liver.

I rarely took abx but developed food intolerances and allergies everytime I had active lyme disease.
I treated almost exclusively with herbs and homeopathy and still got the allergies. I believe allergy is related to toxins but also to the immune system itself, that is compromised with infections, not working well.
The abx also won't make your immune system strong, on the contrary, it will weaken your immune system by killing your intestinal flora, that protects your body against infections.
It will compromise your digestion and molecules that are not supposed to cross your intestinal barrier may pass and you may develop more allergies (in my opinion).
But even without abx, I developed food allergies.
When lyme got dormant, so MOST of my food allergies disappeared. Not all, but most. Everytime I got bitten again and the disease started, I got sensitive again to many things.
They are almost all gone now. I still react to kiwi, I think, but I had that before lyme...

I've been on treatment 3 years and have recently no longer able to tolerate dairy and gluten.
I suspect flagyl initiated the dairy problem. I think I have killed off all the good enzymes that digest this stuff. It helps me to take digestive enzymes with food.
