I'm getting an MRI on Friday. Do I need to be concerned with the dye used for the contrast....I mean as far as detoxing it goes. I hate to put anything more in my body for my liver and kidneys to deal with, but obviously I don't have much choice here. Anything to worry about? [confused]

Number one thing to do is drink tons of water after the test. I've read that taking N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can be helpful in protecting the kidneys from the dyes used for the contrast prior to MRI and CAT scans. I think it applies to both

I read there's something else you can take to cleanse your kidneys afterwards but cannot remember what it is. Wonder if Chiquita Incognita who knows a lot about herbs or someone else might have some suggestions for you. I have kidney disease so this is something I try to stay informed about.

Drink tons of water for the rest of the day!

I did a closed MRI without contrast and they found lesions. They suggested my next one with contrast. I'm not sure yet.

I had two MRI's w/ contrast and had no problem at all. And I am VERY sensitive.

On the other hand,

I had an abdominal CAT scan/angiogram with some kind of dye, and I thought I was going to croak! As soon as it went it, it burned the poo out of my insides, especially my bladder. Never again.

I don't know what the difference is in the two dyes, but the CAT scan die was awful.

I think I've heard that the contrast dye can potentially cause kidney problems...may have even seen a tv ad for an ambulance chaser lawyer trying to build class action suit around this?

Resolved, don't let it worry you. Like I said, drink a lot of water all day and evening after the test. Take the NAC supplements tomorrow (read how much to take) and you should be fine.

I read that you can ask your doctor to have the radiologist use a safer form of dye if you're concerned about your kidneys. They have "weaker" dyes that are supposed to be just as good as the stronger ones and safer too. Just a thought.

You might want to pm Chiquita Incognita and ask her what she might suggest you use to cleanse your kidneys afterwards. I'm sure there's a good tincture or something for that, but I don't know what it might be. Maybe a kidney cleansing tea would be good to drink after the test. Google kidney cleansing teas and see what you come up with.

I pray all goes well for you and that your kidneys will be protected.

I had an MRI with contrast and it didn't affect me adversely, that I know of. I hope it goes well for you!! Just make sure to drink lots of water and do your detox-y stuff afterwards and hopefully you will be fine!

Thanks again, all. Hambone, there is a different dye used in the MRI and the CAT scans. I've read that, as far as the dyes go, the MRI stuff is the easiest to tolerate. Probably why you had a rough time with the CAT.

I don't have any pre-existing kidney issues, so I hope I'll be ok.
