Topic: Caster oil packs and coffee enemas: are they messy?

Okay I'm embarrassed to ask this question, so please be easy on me.
I've been curious recently about caster oil liver packs and coffee enemas. A month ago I was saying I would never in 100 years do things like that, but now I'm started to feel slightly interested. I don't know if I'll ever do them, but I'm trying to learn.
Is it always messy to do those above therapies? Do you get so used to it that you are able to do it very cleanly without "mistakes"? Is the first time usually the messiest?
Thanks for the info. Sorry if I grossed anyone out.

Very good question!! You are a very brave man!!
They certainly can be, that's for sure.
My daughter has a certain chair that she sits in for the castor oil packs which now has a towel over it all the time to cover the big grease spots on it.
We place the pack on the skin, then cover with a cut plastic bag and clothes pin it in place, and cover that with a heating pad. If she would take more care, pull the bag up higher, hold the bottom down as she sits, or even wrap up in a big towel, it wouldn't be as messy for sure. But the chair is already greased so too late now.
I have a friend who does castor oil packs and has never made a mess. She does the same - positions the pack, wraps herself in a plastic bag and pins it, but then she wraps her torso completely in a giant old bath towel and goes to bed. She just takes if off in the morning before her shower. Never made a mess.
Coffee enemas? Our experience is that they are messier in the beginning and when you get more used to it, not so much.
I sure wouldn't want to get any coffee on the bathroom floor as I'd think it would stain, so laying on a big towel and having a roll of paper towels handy is helpful.
We put down a waterproof "towel" that I got at a grocery store beach display for $3.99. It's supposed to be used at the beach, to lay real towels on. It's about 4'x4', thin, and weighted at each corner so the ocean breeze can't blow it away I guess. It works really well to contain any spilled coffee drops and they just wipe right up.

Another thought. Wash the towels you use and the clothes you wear for castor oil packs separately from any other laundry and put something in the washer with them that fights grease really well.
I didn't the first time I washed those things and the grease spread to the other clothes. Luckily they weren't good things.

hens - thanks a lot for the tips! I really like the 4x4 waterproof towel idea. I couldn't find waterproof towels on Amazon, but I found a cheap 6x6 plastic shower curtain for $10! That should work in a similar manner, no?
Wow, that was a great tip about washing the clothes separately! Thanks.
Can you please tell me what you think of the following items?
I'm desperate to get rid of this Lyme, so that's why I've started getting more curious about these uncomfortable therapies. Plus I'm having certain over-toxicity problems, and my liver enzymes are up, so I think I have to take detox more seriously.

A shower curtain would work well to protect your floor.
It's always hard to figure out what to get, what's the right thing, isn't it? I always get stuck - someone here recommends magnesium, but I want to know what kind, where to get it, how much should I expect to pay.
The first link you have shows a castor oil pack kit. Too much stuff, not necessary, too expensive.
The second link shows a disposable pack. How would that heat in the oven? Nope.
The third link shows a disposable enema kit. No way no how would I stick any hose less than optimal into you know where! No fraying, no scratching, nothing left behind (haha!) for me, thank you very much!
For the castor oil packs, I got this at my local health food store -
Enema Hose Clamp White Plastic $2 Silicone Colon Tube - Closed End - 32Fr - 30 inch $21.99 2 Quart Custom Enema Bag with Hose and Clamp $50
Hope this helps!

I've never done castor oil packs, but enemas are generally neat. Do them in the bathroom so you're not far from the toilet in case you can't hold it as long as you are expecting to. Also, have paper towels handy.

I don't find it messy at all
For coffee enemas I lay in the empty bathtub. I spray hot water on it first to warm it up. Coffee enemas have been the absolute biggest help to me. Once you get the hang of it, it will go smoothly.

Awesome! Thanks a ton for the help, everyone!
I think for now I'm going to put aside the castor oil packs, and I think I'm going to (probably) try the coffee enemas. EEEEK! I never thought I'd say such a thing.
From what I've read, it sounds like the enemas have tons more health benefits than the caster oil packs. Even if I were to add on the packs later... I don't think it would be good for me to experiment with two new messy therapies in the same week! I might get discouraged.
I can't believe I'm even considering trying such a thing! This disease is really breaking me down.

Both can be messy but the key is in the preparation. I find the coffee enema very difficult to do, but it could be very helpful. I had to stop after a month after I developed some reaction to it. So now I stick to the Castor oil packs... much more relaxing for me. To avoid ruining my clothes I just don't wear any. Wrap myself up and watch and good movie, make phone calls, read or take a nap. Then follow by a bath. I love it!

I haven't done the enemas but I've been doing the packs. Well, I've done them about 5 times and would really like to do them more. No mess here. I have an old sheet that I lay on and I just bought a holder from the local pharmacy to keep it in place.
I do have to use the cotton flannels though. The wool made me itch and I broke out.
I don't wear any clothes really either. Just a bathing suit bottom that I bought at Walmart for cheap, just for that purpose. I don't really care if it gets ruined.
Anyone know if there are any contraindications to the coffee enema? I'll probably look into it as well, but just figured I would ask.

I'm just about to start the coffee enemas myself, James. I'm just as curious as you. Hoping it won't be too messy From what I read it looks to be a big help!
I did a lot of research on what kit to buy, especially as I'm chemically sensitive and sensitive to plastics. I ended up buying this kit, which just arrived.
I have yet to try it, but it looks good. It seemed to be the "cleanest" chemical-wise that I could find...and especially when we're putting something into the colon, that absorbs so much, I figured it was important.
Good luck!

@LymeAware: Yay! Good luck to you, too! I'm still thinking about getting some of the $3 disposable kits. At least with those I'll be able to see if I will be able to "do" this. There's a possibility that I hate it and I say "I'll never do this ever again!" Then I'd feel bad for having spent money on an expensive kit.
@Philly: that document you showed me about yeast was VERY inspiring about C.E.s.
@Anyone: do the coffee beans have to be boiled with the water in a pot, or can I just use a coffee maker? Thanks.

Oh yeah, here's another good question: Does anybody put anything else in their "special" coffee? Maybe some minerals, h2o2, nosodes, vitamins, pet hamster (joke), etc?
I figure, if I'm gonna be putting something where the sun don't shine, I might as well make it good!

That sounds like a good plan for getting started.
Regarding the coffee: I was told to be certain that whatever coffee you use is organic. I'm using a special coffee made just for enemas: http://www.sawilsons.com/
But in general the main thing is just to be sure it's organic. My doc said that coffee is one of the most pesticide laden things out there.
Also, you can you use a coffee maker, but I was told that you shouldn't filter it through paper...it should be a metal filter. Apparently paper filters out a lot of the good stuff that the enemas help with.
I'm not planning to add anything, but that sounds interesting. I'll look forward to hearing how it goes for you...if you feel like sharing Posts: 232 | From Oregon | Registered: May 2010

Well, since you already have your equipment, you're probably going to have to do it first. I'm planning on ordering my merchandise online tomorrow, so I should get it Tues or Wednesday.
I'm not 100% sure yet that I'll follow through with the "project", but I'll definitely get the stuff "just in case" I ever feel impulsive enough to try it.

I use an enema bag from the drugstore -cost about $14 and it used it tons of times.
Basically it's a hot water bottle with a hose on it. After using it for a year I was curious to see how clean it was in the inside and I cut it open. It was fine, the only thing concerning me is the glue that is holding the neck on the bottle. I still use this type of enema bag.
I also do a cleaning round with distilled water with a dropperful of choropyll added. It helps to retain the coffee afterwards.

Here are the instructions we follow for coffee enemas.
COFFEE ENEMA
Recommendation: with the approval of your physician, take a coffee enema daily, or a minimum of 4 times a week for the first 4 months of your program. Thereafter, take as needed, e.g., if and when you feel toxic or experience problems with elimination.
The coffee enema is believed to be useful in aiding the liver in its processes of detoxification, as well as aiding the colon in its activities of elimination. The efficient removal of metabolic waste and toxins through the colon is vital to the maintenance of health and the prevention of illness.
The coffee enema may be performed at any time that is convenient for you. It usually takes from 30-60 minutes, depending on the person. It is best to choose a time period when you will feel unrushed and will generally be undisturbed.
Most people prefer to take the enema in the morning, because for many people, taking it in the evening tends to keep them awake at night or otherwise disrupts their sleep. Others find that their sleep is not at all bothered and prefer the enema in the evening.
Some find it preferable to take the enema before a meal, while others prefer it following a meal or between meals. There is really no best time to do the enema; it is only a matter of individual preference.
Necessary Articles
Coffee must be organically grown. Commercial coffees are loaded with herbicides and pesticides. Organic coffee is available through health food stores or direct from SYNERGISTICS. Never use instant or decaffeinated coffees.
Enema Bag Any bag designed for enema usage is acceptable. Based on experience, however, most have found the use of the type that is designed as a combination enema/douche bag to be preferable to the combination enema/douche/hot water bottle. The former conveniently has a permanently open wide mouth at one end allowing the easy addition of liquid, whereas those of the hot water bottle variety require constant sealing and unsealing for their use.
Colon Tube A 30 inch colon tube, size FR22 or FR28 is required. The 2 inch enema nozzle that usually comes with the enema bag is insufficient for the high enema. Colon tubes are generally available form a hospital supply or drug store. They are also available directly from SYNERGISTICS.
Lubricant A lubricant is required for the insertion of the colon tube. Any natural lubricant is acceptable. Avoid any commercial, chemical lubricants. Natural herbal ointments are available from health food stores. Chickweed herbal ointment is available from SYNERGISTICS. Natural oils or butter can also be used.
Preparation
Coffee may be prepared using glass, stainless steel or enamel cookware. Never use aluminum or Teflon.
Unboiled coffee using the drip or the toddy method is the preferable means of preparation. However, the use of an electric percolator is acceptable. You can also just use a saucepan: fill the pan with a quart of pure water. Bring water to a boil and immediately turn off the burner. Add the desired amount of ground coffee and steep until cooled to the desired temperature. Strain and use.
Always use distilled water or water purified through the reverse osmosis. Tap water is generally unsuitable for drinking or for enemas in a health-building program.
Use anywhere from 1 tsp to 4 T of coffee grounds to a quart of water. Exactly how much you use on a regular basis will depend on your metabolic individuality. You should expect to feel a sense of ease and well-being on the completion of the enema. If you experience jitteriness, shakiness, lightheadedness, nervousness, weakness, etc., you will need to decrease the strength of the coffee solution. Consult your physician on this issue if you have questions.
Coffee Enema Procedure
If you are having regular bowel movements, the enema should be performed preferably following the bowel movement rather than before it. When you do coffee enemas on a regular, daily basis, however, you may not accumulate enough bulk to continue to have regular movements. If this is the case, you should not strain to have a natural bowel movement first, as this may result in the development of hemorrhoids. When your program of daily enemas is discontinued, your normal daily bowel movements may resume. The enemas will sufficiently serve to evacuate the bowel if you do not have a natural movement.
Arrange an area on the bathroom floor to infuse the coffee solution - most people lay an old towel atop a throw-rug or folded blanket situated on the floor of the bathroom. The coffee is infused when in a prone position, so most people make the floor as comfortable as possible. Some prop pillows against the wall and use the time in comfort for reading or making phone calls.
Find a place from which to hang the enema bag it should not be higher than about 2 feet off the ground (assuming you will lie on the floor). If the bag is too high, the solution will flow with too much force, causing discomfort.
Hang the enema bag from the place you have chosen.
Connect the colon tube to the plastic nozzle on the end of the tube that comes with the enema bag.
Close off the hose leading to the colon tube with the attachment provided to prevent the escape of any fluids.
Add the coffee solution to the enema bag.
Open the flow control and allow a little coffee to flow to the end of the tube and out into the sink, toilet or bathtub, just enough to eliminate any air in the tube.
Lubricate the first several inches of the colon tube additional lubrication may be applied to the rectum to aid in the insertion of the colon tube.
Insert the colon tube into the rectum most prefer to accomplish this while lying on their left side. Ideally, the tube should be fully inserted. How this is best accomplished soon becomes a matter of individuality learned through trial and error. Everyone has a different colon in terms of twists and turns as well as degrees of contraction and relaxation. For some, it is a simple matter to fully insert the tube. For others, it requires patient, gentle effort.
Allowing the slow inflow of solution while inserting the tube is often helpful. Also, many find that twisting and turning the tube while gently pushing facilitates its progress. Others suggest that momentarily withdrawing the tube slightly and then proceeding with its insertion can help get around tough corners the various bends and turns in the colon.
Under no circumstances should any force be used. The whole procedure should be very easy and gentle.
Many people are simply unable to fully insert the tube. That is all right. You should just insert the tube as far as your colon will easily allow. It usually takes experiencing several enemas before you become comfortable with the procedure and adopt your own individual means for doing it.
Allow the coffee solution (1 Qt) to flow into the colon the rate of flow can be regulated with the control apparatus. When the flow is completed, you may remove the tube or leave it inserted during the course of the enema. Many people prefer to leave the tube inserted with the valve left open, as it will allow any gas present in the colon to escape.
Lay on your left side for 5 minutes, on your back for 5 minutes, and on your right side for 5 minutes.
After the 15 minutes, you may then expel the enema you should not strain to hold the enema. If you feel the need to expel before the 15 minutes, you should do so. No straining of any kind should be done at any time. The whole process should be very effortless.
(Note from DD's nurse: I add 1 T black strap molasses to the hot water. Give enema on Left side. Roll onto Right side and hold 20 minutes. If spasms, gently smack spasming area with cupped hand. Not everyone can hold a full quart of water comfortably. It is fine to use 1/2 quart for enema and then do it again using the other 1/2.)

Wow, those are excellent instructions! Thanks.
Here's something I'm confused about: other instructions said to insert the tube only 2 inches, but this one sounds like you have to insert the tube a lot more. I think I'm missing something. How far are we supposed to insert the tube? Thanks

I just buy an enema bag/hotwater bottle from Walgreens.
I use 4 tbsp per quart of water for the coffee and make it in a french press. If it's your first one, make WEAK coffee, maybe 1 tbsp and see how it goes. A handful of people have a negative reaction, but if you're one of them, less coffee is better.
I've only known two people to have this reaction, but that makes it enough that it's worth mentioning.

I know some will disagree, but to do a coffee enema with the intent of aiding the liver, it must be a high colonic. So you must insert the tube more like 30" into the rectum (or as close as is comfortable).
I'd really rather this wasn't the case as I'd be perfectly happy to insert it only 2". And believe me, I asked DD's nurse a few times to make sure I understood correctly!
But she said it must be a high insertion, as a lower insertion (2+") will cleanse the colon but not reach the liver.
Also, my daughter and I are dealing with adrenal issues (trying to balance them again) and have had to start real slow with the coffee. We use 1-2 tsp for the whole quart. When we used more than this, we were shaky and feeling yuck. I recommend starting slow.

Hi James...those disposable ones on Amazon are the same ones I have been using for I guess it's been a year now.
I am just overly paranoid about cleaning a reusable one. I don't want any bacterial contamination so I just get the disposable ones. They are definitely sturdy enough to clean and reuse if you wanted but I don't.
Also they come with a rectangle little pad to absorb anything that spills which is great. So what I do is lay down two old towels on my bathroom floor and then I put that aborbable pad down and that works out great.
So if you do that you may not even need the shower curtain.
Also I use very weak coffee. I am so sensitive to caffeine that I started out slow and am still using a low amount.
I know most people use 2-3 Tablespoons per quart but I can only do 1 1/2 TEASPOONS. That is just me though. Most people don't seem to have such a problem like I do. I tried to increase to 2 teaspoons last week and couldn't handle it.
So just start out with a low dose. OH and definitely do organic coffee like others here mentioned.
The first one may be a bit frustrating since you aren't used to it but after that I found it to be just fine. Definitely not as bad as I made it out to be. I also said I would never do one but here I am a year later still doing them lol!
Take Care! Pam :-)

Keep in mind. The more you do it the easier and better you feel. Do not give up too soon on it if your first experiences do not go so well.. Your body will start accepting the procedure and the enema the more you do practice I had my mother who had cancer try these and after a week or two she could not live without them Watch out. Some people get hooked.. On the good feeling you get afterward and you will want that every day.
Also make sure to follow the directions. And make sure you pay attention to depth and how far the enema goes upward.. To get to the liver cleansing you will see it takes time to get it deep up enough and then follow directions of laying on your side and how long to hold it as well.
Each time ti will end up being easier to hold.. easier to take in the full amount.. and easier to get it up high enough etc.
Sorry for the graphic words.. but did not know how else to say it..
: ) Great thing.. those enemas.. I have not done mine in a while but i did then at least 4 times a week for almost a year and during the hight of intensive treatments.. It was a huge help with detox.. and cleansing.. etc.
Also you can start by using warm water or warm salt water.. and if the coffee is too much for you. Some people get all crampedup from the stimulate of it at first.. If so back off to one of those options and slowly add the coffee ones in starting at diluted strengths..

Here's another question: Is it bad to do the enemas every day? Is there a limit on how many times per week we're supposed to do it, like 3 or 4 times per week?
Can anyone recommend a good book on the topic? I'd really like to study more about this, because I feel vulnerable unless I understand everything about the process. I tried to search amazon for "enema" and "colon cleanse", but I don't know which books are good.

That sounds horrible. :/ All the articles I've read all say 2". I wonder why her nurse is saying a high colonic? Everything I read, including the studies, all say 2-3" insertion.
It's the veins that take the caffeine to the liver - "The coffee is absorbed into the hemorrhoidal vein (in the anus), and then it is taken up to the liver by the portal vein."
I would ask her for her sources ..... that process sounds a lot more complicated.

Hey, Six, I thought this would get your attention!!
I know, hard to believe!
DD's nurse did give me her source, a doc, I think. Of course, I can't find it right now.
She has given me so much reason to trust her in the past that I'm choosing to trust her on this one too.
It's actually not that bad, believe it or not.
I'll google and look around... hey, i'm back and all I see says a few inches too.
OK, we see DD's nurse on Wed. I'll ask again what her reasoning is.

I kind of get her reasoning. I've read, however, and I don't have a link, that it's meant to be a low enema, to not make it a high enema, much less a colonic, because the "vein" is low, and that's where you want the coffee.
Nonetheless, I had great results with a low enema.

You can get cheap shower curtains in the supermarket or a discount store for $3-5. You could even just cut open a garbage bag & use that.
Also - don't know if anyone mentioned it - use baking soda to remove the excess castor oil from you or your shower/bathtub. It's very sticky & hard to remove otherwise.
It's good to have some old towels to use for lining the bathtub if you lay in there for the enema or for doing the castor oil pack. I put the used flannel in a ziplock bag after so I can reuse it. I think it stays good for 5-7 usages - maybe more...? You may even want to keep it in the fridge but let it warm up before using it again.
I don't do the enemas unless I really need it. I think it's better to let the body work on it's own if possible but some may disagree. Plain water is sometimes better - it depends on your personal situation.

I did them every day when I was super sick (sometimes twice when I was desperate to feel well). Interestingly enough once I was feeling well, I would do one every week or two just for detox maintenance and it seemed ridiculous to do as in there was no need.
With the Gerson protocol I think people are doing three coffee enemas a day.

Woohoo! My special C.E. equipment should be arriving tomorrow! I'm so excited!
I have a question about the caster oil packs: For those of you who wrap the heat pad around themselves: aren't you worried about EMF radiation coming from the heat pad? For example, this is the same reason why we're not supposed to sleep with electric blankets - because of the EMFs. Maybe the heat pack isn't on us for long enough to cause EMF problems? I'm curious about this.

I just did what I said I would never do!!! You know what I'm talkin' about... don't make me spell it out because I'm a little embarrassed about it.
It really wasn't all that bad. I think it takes a lot of time, though. The instructions I used said to do 2 x 15-minute sessions. Overall, with the cleanup and everything, I think it took about an hour. But of course it was my first time, and hopefully it'll go faster as I gain more experience.
I just have a question for the C.E. experts: Is there any kind of "trick" to "get it all out" when you're finished? Somehow it doesn't all come out for me, and when I think I'm done, 5 minutes later I have to expel again. It's kinda annoying. Also, even after expelling multiple times, it still feels like there is liquid inside of me, and I have to struggle to hold it in. Am I doing something wrong?
BTW I did the CE while laying on my back, because I thought it'd be more comfortable to read in that position. Maybe is this why it didn't all come out in the end?
Thanks everyone here for the advice!! It was much appreciated. I actually feel VERY good right now, but it's too early to draw conclusions. I just hope it lowers my liver enzymes as well.
For any of you who are contemplating trying this, I say: DO IT!! Look at us spending all this money on drugs and supplements, when we could be doing this powerful therapy for a small amount of money. I've been spending a fortune on things that raise the glutathione levels, but they say that a coffee enema raises the glutathione levels by 700%! And all of this for the price of 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds...
Final note: I used 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds, and I don't feel any kind of buzz from the caffeine. And I'm usually extremely sensitive to caffeine, because I try to stay away from caffeinated products.

Okay sorry for writing so much. I have a new question:
The movements and sounds that are coming from the right side of the abdomen both during and after the CE... is that due to the peristaltic movements of the colon, or is it due to the liver?

Congratulations!!!
Eventually you may be able to do the quart at one time, then it cuts the time in half. I don't know why it's not all coming out. I usually sit there for a few minutes to give it time to.
I did them daily when I was sick because they made me feel so much better.

Sometimes you will hear or feel a squirting out and emptying of the gallbladder. This occurs under the right rib cage, or sometimes more closely to the mid line. If after a week of daily enemas you have never felt or heard the gall bladder release, You should consider making the coffee stronger, going up in 1/2 Tablespoon increments per quart, not exceeding 2 Tablespoon per cup. Alternately, you may need a slightly larger volume, such as 3 cups at a time. Sometimes, 3 enemas (2 cups or less each) rather than two at a session are more beneficial for some.

NAC is good to increase glutathionine, too.

2 X 15 is too long One 15 min session is enough. Whole session incl clean up is 40 minutes for me.
I use one TBSP of coffee for one cup of water.
If it seems not that much coffee expels afterwards, for me that is a sign that I am a bit dehydrated. Need to drink more water.
I think most people are laying on their right side when they do this.
I agree with you, it's am amzing therapy for very little money. It's too bad so many people are put off by them because they wouldn't have to suffer so much.

James1979,
Try laying on your right side w/ your legs up like in a fetal position. It was very effective for me too for about a month then I developed a bad reaction so I'm bummed I can't do it anymore.
But I discovered castor oil packs, 3 hours on that and I achieved the same results. Much more pleasant for me, so I love it! Good job by the way!!

Six,
I asked DD's nurse about the enemas. She said I'm to go 12" which is where the Superior Hemorrhoidal Vein is. She follows Gerson's therapy. She's been doing it a long time, has helped many with cancer. Well, glad I asked her. 12" sure beats 30"!!

Sweet!! Thanks for the links, hens!
I think it's funny that you tried 30". lol. You'd have to make sure it doesn't start coming up your throat!

Thanks for checking Hens .... I'm going to stick with 2" though. Why change it if it's working for me? Not that I do them very often anymore .....

I've been doing the enemas for a while, but not sure if I could insert the enema tip any further than 2". My enema tip is a screw on plastic tip that goes on top of the plastic tubing.
Are you guys saying that we have to insert the actual plastic tubing in the rectum?? That would be uncomfortable. Unless, I have the wrong type of enema equipment. Is there another one that just uses the plastic tubing and had no tip??
Oh and on Castor Oil packs. I love them but last night I got a really bad reaction to it. I had it on for 2 hours with really high heat and suddenly started itching and my whole side was red and swollen! After a cold shower and ice packs I was fine, but I'm a bit scared about doing it again.
Not sure if it was the castor oil or the heat that caused that.

I get a strange feeling of well-being after doing a CE. Does anyone else get that? I wonder if it's just from a coffee buzz - but I really don't feel any systemic effects of the caffeine.

Coffee enemas would make me feel 30% better when I was sick. I started every day with one.
