Anyone have good resources on pregnancy with Lyme disease? I have been in treatment for chronic Lyme for 2 years and am seeing big improvement and a light at the end of the tunnel. My husband and I really want to have a child and I now feel like it might be a possibility sometime soon, but am not able to find much information about the risks to the baby or even to me in terms of relapsing. At what point in treatment is it safe to consider pregnancy? Also want to find some info on treatment during pregnancy.

Also, is there anyone on the boards who has been pregnant after being diagnosed with chronic Lyme and is willing to share their experiences with me?

Thanks for any help you can give me!
Kelly

It is not recommended that a person with lyme disease become pregnant since the lyme can cross the placenta and the child can then be born with lyme.

Most women don't want to chance that. So, the safest thing is to get rid of your lyme and wait at least 1 year after treatment. If you don't relapse in that time, then is a safer time to get pregnant.

Burrascano has a short section on pregnancy and lyme starting on page 21. Here is the link:

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

And, as you can read, he advises against breastfeeding because the baby can also get lyme from you that way.

i'm sorry but with my lyme i would never risk passing it to a child. that's why lyme patients cannot donate blood, ever.

yahoo has a group called preg lyme. There is a lot of good info there. I gave my son lyme congenitally even being on abx the entire pregnancy. I was very sick at the time though and had only been in treatment a short time.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I would like to get pregnant too. I'm 36 and I feel my clock is ticking. I asked my Obgyn about lyme and pregnancy. She said that with good treatment she's seen plenty of women give birth to healthy babies. Just make sure your llmd is on board. I think its possible.

I know a lady on the forum who treated with one antibiotic during pregnancy. The baby 4 months is expected to be fine. Her new doctor says that he actually treats pregnant women with 2 antibiotics during pregnancy now.

I obviously didn't have to deal with this big decision because I was in the dark. I'm glad you are working towards an educated decision.

I'd make sure to get with a well experienced doctor and maybe get a second opinion.

Breastfeeding is a whole other decision.

I wish you the best!

I have chronic lyme and was treated with bicillin shots throughout my pregnancy. It is two years later, and my daughter is happy and healthy.
