Personally I would suggest following the Buhner protocol in the Healing Lyme book. I would just start with the basic core treatment for lyme and wait on treating bartonella and babesia. Unfortunately hubby's experience has been that herbals are not very effective for the coinfections.
The Planet Thrive website is helpful and there is also a Buhner group on yahoo.
I would start only 1 herb at a time and take only 1 capsule at a time to start. Work up to the doses of 4 capsules of each herb up to 3 or 4 times daily over the course of 2 - 4 weeks. Everyone is different and some can tolerate certain herbs better than others.
For people who are very sick it is often best to start with just lyme treatment for a month or two before tackling the coinfections anyway. Treating everything at once could make a person much sicker due to the dieoff or herxheimer reactions.
If you list some of the specific symptoms your kids are having then others can suggest various herbs or supplements or other treatments which might help.
For example, almost everyone can benefit from extra magnesium. I would suggest epsom salt baths with added baking soda. Probably start with 1/2 cup of each and work up to 2 cups of baking soda and 3 or 4 cups of epsom salts. Stay in a warm (not hot) bath for 20 or 30 minutes if tolerated. You could try just soaking your hands and feet in a bucket of water with the baking soda and epsom salts if a full bath is not possible.
If you have a friendly PCP then I would try to go ahead and get a prescription for doxycycline and start that for the older child. Herbs and antibiotics can be taken together and actually that often works better than sticking to either just antibiotics or just herbs.

I agree with the Seibert regarding the Buhner protocol. You can also go to www.buhnerhealinglyme.com and get information directly from Buhner's site. I have had GREAT success by adding his protocol to help combat my early to mid stage lyme problems(diagnosed in July) after my symptoms continued to get worse with a 4 week course of antibiotics. I went from increasing symptoms on antibiotics to almost symptom free in about 2 weeks on Buhners. He also has an extensive question and answer section on his website that can help you directly with your children--especially different dosages based upon their weights. Best of luck!

I hear the urgency in your voice. Sorry that you and your kids are so sick. I'm not experienced with treating children who have Lyme and Co, but the above advice sounds good. Of course, be sure that you are giving any herbals according to your childrens' body weight.
Always start slow, one herb at a time to make sure of how they are handling it. Keep a journal or log for each person being treated, name of herb being used, dosage, and reactions.
Be aware that Herxheimer reactions can occur. These are caused by organisms dying off and releaseing toxins that can make one feel pretty miserable. Herx responses can be moderated by cutting back on the dosage, and by detoxing. Bea had some suggestions for detoxing above. Also, drink water; or water with lemon juice in it.
I'm not quite awake yet, so I'll just wish you the best. Keep coming back to Lymenet for support.

If I could go back to that time between getting my daughter's diagnosis and waiting months for an appt. the one thing I would do differently is that I would have treated aggressively for parasites.
