My husband is starting doxy again. Last time was over winter so no problem staying out of the sun.
He has a couple questions:
How long does it stay in your system?
If he's taking it at supper time will it still cause problems to go outside the next morning?
How long can you be out at a time?
He had been laying out in the sun for 20 minutes every nice warm sunny day this spring. Obviously that will need to change with the doxy.

good question. I go on it soon. It's already hot and sunny here. It takes me 30 minutes to walk mile and I'm supposed to help paint the house
I'm outside alot. There's no way I can a avoid the sun. Plus I'm driving to new Mexico next week.

To my understanding, it depends on the person, and it depends on the dosage. I was on 200MG a day last year, and never noticed any sensitivity. Now that I'm on 400MG a day however, things are very different. I haven't gotten a burn yet, but I think I've gotten close many times.
Seems like I can be outside for short spurts (walking from the car to the store) with no problem, but any time that I'm standing in the sun for more than a few minutes, it feels like I'm burning.
The car is a whole other challenge. I was considering getting long gloves that go up to my elbows to protect me since when I drive it's for long stretches and inevitably the sun is always beating down on my hands.
So, I try to have a hat and a long-sleeved shirt with me at all times (better to sweat than to burn) and even carry an umbrella with me at times. People think I'm a freak, but I'd rather be strange than burnt!

You cannot stay out long at all.. some people burn while driving their cars!!
It will stay in your system for 7-10 days after stopping it.
randi.. you will have to be VERY careful where you are. I don't see how you can manage 30 min while on doxy

How long does it stay in your system?
For me over a year and a half!
I walk to the corner store and back on a sunny day and I am tanned. This was from minocycline
Not the worst side effect to have I suppose

Another question: Can you be out in the shade of trees or on the shaded porch?
He's not driving yet and usually only goes away to doctor appointments.
He does go outside at least a little bit every day. He will need to make some changes to his routine.

Shade was okay for me. But if there was any type of filtered sunlight, I would burn. It's an ugly, ugly rash.
As someone previously mentioned, I also wasn't able to drive without covering my hands. The sunlight through the car windows got me.
I started to recognize the sensation of too much sun exposure while on doxy. For me, it felt like it was lightly raining on my skin. If it got that far, I knew I needed to get inside as soon as possible.
I found some great SPF shirts and hats and used them. Still, I didn't enjoy the outdoors like I did before being on doxy.

Hmmm, someone above said that at 200 mg/day they were alright in the sun. That is all I was on, so I wonder if that would work for me. I just went off it, because as it gets brighter and sunnier, I didn't want to risk it. That is probably still the safest route.
I am having a hard time figuring out what to take instead though for Anaplasma and to go with rifampin for Bart. I would hate to find out the hard way that at 200 mg, I still have sun sensitivity.
This is a big deal in the summer. Even mino has sun sensitivity issues, although less, I understand. Plus, it has other problems: vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, etc.
Yeah, randi, you surely need to have your dr rx something else. Texas sun with doxy is NOT a good mix!

Doxy is tough in the summer! I've gotten burned just driving in the car.
The photosensitivities caused by doxy are different from a typical sunburn, so precautions like sunblock are not really effective. On a high dose of doxy (400 MG or more), the burns can happen pretty quickly.
If you can, switch to something else for the summer. And if that's not an option, wear hats while outside, and light colored, lightweight long sleeved tops and long legged pants, and stay in the shade. And be careful of your hands! They are most susceptible for burns, since they are rarely covered.

I agree with the other posters. Doxy can cause severe sun-sensitivity even when wearing sunscreen.
When I was on Doxy, if I even walked down the driveway to get the mail and the sun was out my skin felt like it was burning from the inside out. My knuckles got severly burned from the sun coming into the car when I was driving.
I did not have this problem with Minocycline. Maybe your husband could take it instead?

So I had a Disney vacation planned while on Doxy. I stopped about 5 days prior. While I had some blotchy sunburn/redness, I didn't have any of the stinging neuro stuff during my trip. My doc at that time was going to shift me to amox for the sunny summer season. My 2 cents.
