I have had reflux for the past 2 years- ever since this Lyme crap started. But, my llmd put me on doxy about a month ago and it got SO BAD- worse than ever. So painful. Anyways, it got so bad that they had me take a break then switched me to mink -was on rifampin with this too. But, after the whole doxy incident, even after my break, my throat never felt like it completely healed. Anyways, it started getting bad again, so I took another break last Thursday. I still haven't gone back on bc it feels SO BAD still. My throat kills.-Can this really just be reflux. I am a little scared. I am on proton pump inhibitors and also diflucan Dwight now in case of yeast.

Hi, Thank you so much for responding? What is DGL and where do I get that? I have been on diflcuan since yesterday only. Yes, I am doing the candida diet. I do the best I can with GF. Gluten doesn't seem to bother me though. The only food allergy I have is dairy, which I stay away from. And yes, I do have a hiatal hernia. - what to do about this? I am having an endoscopy 11/12. I scheduled it today. Do you have any suggestions of what I should ask doc? I had endoscopy 2 years ago and that is when they dx'ed me with reflux, saw a little irritation in there too an told me about the hiatal hernia. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You can find DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) and digestive enzymes (enzymes created by the pancreas, stomach & intestine, & liver, and used by the body to digest food) at most health food stores, or online at vitacost.com or supersup.com
My personal favorite enzymes are a combination of two different products: Country Life MaxyZyme and Enzymedica Acid Soothe. I take two caps of each with every meal (near the beginning of the meal).
The Acid Soothe can also be taken anytime you feel the reflux...the zinc carnosine can help to protect the tissues from the acid reflux.
Best way I've found to do this is to open the capsules in your mouth and take a swig of water to wash it down. Yes, it is unpleasant flavor, but not too terrible.
I'd recommend acupuncture for the hiatal hernia - it helped me a lot when I had problems with mine (somehow, gallbladder surgery has corrected my hiatal hernia problems).
Make sure the doctor tests you for h. pylori (a tissue sample and aspirate is needed during the scope for this).
H. pylori can cause acid reflux, too - it is a bacteria and you may not have been on the correct combination of antibiotics to have gotten rid of it, or it may have re-occurred...
The probiotics you're on are excellent.

You know about diet, right? Avoid acid foods that make it worse -- often tomato sauce, orange juice, spicy foods. This doesn't cure anything but relieves symptoms & reduces irritation of esophagus while you are working on the suggestions from others above. Hopefully your doc told you all about this when you got diagnosed.

I was on a proton pump inhibitor for years for gastritis and also had hiatal hernia.
Once I was dx by my curent md with Lyme and Bart she told me I actually had low stomach acid which can cause the same symptoms.
There is a burp test you can look it up online. I started hcl and was treated for a small bowel overgrowth with Cipro.
Everyone is different so you have to go about this discovery with your doctor. It has helped me a lot with those symptoms. Lyme can cause low stomach acid and Bart can cause gastritis.
I know your symptoms are related to the medications you took so definitely follow your doctors instructions. I just thought I would share. I was shocked when I found out everthying I had been told was the complete opposite.
