I started Armour last week in a low dose 30mg and about 5 days in I had a very high fever, sore throat, muscle and joint pain and a severe headache that was making me very nervous. It only lasted for one day, but I literally could not move or function whatsoever.
I don't see that this is a common reaction to this medication and I hadn't changed anything in my Lyme treatment to set off a herx.
Have any of you heard of this happening? My thyroid tests were borderline hypo not severe but "off" enough to warrant a trial.

I have never heard of this kind of reaction to Armour.
Do you think you could have some kind of virus? I have had a sore throat and stuffy nose for a few days now.
Are you still taking Armour?

I am still taking it and I thought it was odd too. I don't think it was a virus though. I never get sick and I wasn't exposed to anything. The timing was too close. I think it was either Armour or the increase in outside temperature that day.
The strange thing was that it only lasted one day but I still feel really wiped out. I've started getting hot flashes with severe weakness (almost paralysis) of my legs and arms. Like I'm passing out.
I went in to a doctor's office a few days after it ended and I guess they didn't pick anything serious up although I was having some pretty constant heart palpitations at the time (that started before I ever took Armour).

Well, we're not doctors here, but I have never heard of that reaction to Armour thyroid supplementation. I would guess you had a bug.
When you're able to do a test again, you could try an even smaller amount and see if you have any reaction. I usually start with the smallest amount of anything to see whether I pass it.

I just started armour thyroid a few days ago. I am taking 60 mg. So far I have not had any issues. I have actually noticed an increase in energy. If your reaction was due to the armour I would think you would continue to have symptoms.

Yeah, I'm wondering if it triggered an increase in adrenal symptoms. I've heard that starting thyroid hormones can sometimes exacerbate adrenal issues. I'm not aggressively treating adrenal insufficiency and I have not directly tested that either although my DHEA was normal.

It may be possible that you did contract a virus.
That would require more adrenal support. Stress dosing is important during infection.
It sounds to me like you need more adrenal support. i.e HC, Cortef.

Thanks for the responses. I don't take any HC right now. I take licorice root and occasionally ashwagandha but I don't notice much of a difference on them.
It felt like my immune system kicked in also, but only for one day. It was weird. The severe head/neck ache and fever made me feel like I was headed for a seizure that day.

Summer- Reviewing your post I noted that you had weird heart symptoms going on and mentioned adrenal symptoms too.
Just so you know- Licorice root can cause heart related and other problems for people. Personally I will not use it for that reason, or any herbal mixtures containing it.
Just a quick search indicated...
"Licorice with glycyrrhizin may cause serious side effects. Too much glycyrrhizin causes a condition called pseudoaldosteronism, which can cause a person to become overly sensitive to a hormone in the adrenal cortex.
This condition can lead to headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, and even heart attacks. It may also cause water retention, which can lead to leg swelling and other problems.
Although the most dangerous effects mostly happen with high doses of licorice or glycyrrhizin, smaller amounts of licorice may cause side effects.
Some people have muscle pain or numbness in the arms and legs. To be safe, ask your health care provider to monitor your use of licorice."
Also, please note it is recommended, like use of many herbs...
"Don't use any licorice product for longer than 4 - 6 weeks."

I had similar symptoms on Armour Thyroid too. Stopped for a few days, then started with very low dose. When I got to 30 mg (prescribed daily dose) the symptoms occurred again. Haven't yet been back to the doc. Loved the increased energy!

I have started armour recently and noticed that I am extremely fatigued after a couple of hours. And my mood is awful, I am very irritable and grouchy. All I want to do is eat, anyone have any ideas?
