Can anyone explain to me (in layman's terms ) the controversy on taking D3?
I think I understand that it's possibly a deficiency in mag that lowers D levels... But I am not finding what the danger is in supplementing with D3?
I know when I started taking D3 (6000 mg) I hurt more at first but then started feeling better as my levels went up. And I was sleeping better. And then when I added ReMag. I felt even better. But then I totally crashed. I'm still taking both, and trying to figure out if I should stop or lessen the D3.
I poked around on Magnesium Advocacy Group... But much of it goes over my head. Thanks for the interpretations. Posts: 1728 | From USA | Registered: May 2011

I need to do more reading myself!! I stopped Vit D on their recommendations for about 6 months and then I got the stomach flu and regular flu in a period of about 10 days.
That got me to thinking I needed to get back on the D!! I have yet to be tested properly (my fault.) They recommend having both tests for Vit D before supplementing. Some people DO need it.
Here is what Dr Carolyn Dean had to say about it:
"Vit D is a hormone but being measured as a vitamin and "replaced" when levels are low. One is storage D and one is active D but nobody really knows what they really mean.
I just tell people with the 250HD measurement to stay in the low normals and with Mag RBC stay in the high normal is the best advice. Again: nobody has all the answers. But I do know that many people have gotten in touch with me to say that when they began high dose Vit D, they began to have magnesium deficiency symptoms."
So .. as she says .. and I've heard it repeated over and over: "Taking vitamin D lowers the magnesium levels."
Did you do the adrenal cocktail, kudzu?

Thanks tutu, something I finally sort of understand. When ever you ask on MAG on FB they answer you in riddles!
I have not tried the adrenal cocktail... Is that dr. Dean too?
I did try the minerals but felt a little off so stopped. And I did switch from ReMag for a while cause I was "shocking."
I forget the name of what I switched to (another blue bottle at whole foods that was not pico ionic) That may have been when I started crashing... Hmmm. But also stopped getting shocked all the time.

I believe I read in some Lyme conference where it was discussed that vitamin D helps lyme but I think somehow parasite feed off it (such as proto).
My own experience I was low on vitamin D for like a year, (I did had done juicing previously for like 3 years but my vitamin D levels were still low). I did organic raw local honey and pollen and both my vitamin D and vitamin B is in normal range.

Kudzu .. yes, changing to something else that is less effective would make you crash. At least I know I would crash.
The adrenal cocktail is posted on the MAG site. Remember to check the files for info. The recipe is listed there. I can't do the cocktail because it requires Vit C in the form of orange juice.
At the very least, you need some potassium added in.

lymetoo , where is the mag site? I want to check out this adrenal cocktail please.
I take a single adrenal supplement but my muscles never stop aching.
I take 5000 D3 daily. my genetic showed that my body does not hold onto any D and I was told I would be on it the rest of my life.
I used to (before tick disease tx) get terrible bone breaking muscle ripping cramps in my legs and arms whenever I ate anything with cow dairy in it. even a tiny little glass of milk or 1/4 cu of ice cream.
now, I don't eat any cow milk foods 99% of the time and I haven't noticed these cramps unless I forget or once when I was told by my iridologist that no one needs vit. D. I could definitely tell that I needed it when I stopped and now that the genetic dr told me of my faulty system I have been trying to be very faithful in taking it.
I have not looked into potassium yet even though some people on here told me to

I do think I need potassium.... I tested allergic to most things high in potassium, bananas, peanuts, potatoes, to name a few. I've not eaten any of those in 10 years... About a year ago I started Craving, with a capital CRAVE, Potatoes. I didn't get any rashes... But maybe it made me achy (after making me feel good) I just put two and two together. Gonna look into a potassium supp.

If you search their website they actually have the recommend dosage to take of d3 if you are low to bring your levels back into the norm.

Furthermore, there have been several articles on Medscape that challenge the idea that supplementation of vitamin D is a wise idea. It is necessary to register to access articles on Medscape, but there are several recent articles available on the pros and cons of supplemental Vitamin D there for anyone who has a serious interest in this subject.
Personally, I have never trusted the Vitamin D Council because they are the propaganda arm (or more PC - the "educational" arm) representing the manufacturers and patent holders who reap huge financial benefit from the sale of vitamin D supplements. That's why I look for other more reliable sources from non-biased medical experts.
Also, I have come in contact with quite a few patients who got into trouble by supplementing with high doses of vitamin D for several months and who eventually developed symptoms of vitamin D toxicity. It can take a very long time (many months or even longer) for vitamin D levels to come back down into an acceptable normal range again after excessive supplementation of exogenous vitamin D.

My daughter can't do that cocktail either, but she tells me that Dr. Klinghardt's Rehydration cocktail is fantastic. Unfortunately, I don't know the link to it, and I've heard that his products are a little pricey but that they are very effective and are well worth the price. Hopefully, someone else will know how to find a link to Dr. K's Rehydration Cocktail and will post it for us.
Thanks to Lisa K for posting the link to Morley's MAG Advocacy Group because it's a wonderful resource which I wish I'd known about a long time ago -- although it seems to be a pretty new website, so I guess it wasn't around back when I was first searching for this kind of info several decades ago.

I saw my genetic dr today. he explained about why too much vit D isn't good for some people even if # are low. and I am one of them. so I am lowering my dose from 5,000 to 2,000 a day until we work on other more pressing issues and straighten them out- like my gaba and glutimate issues

I seem to have that vdr taq mutation for vit d3. The dr has given me high doses of it. I always dread taking it.I am taking it once a week. Still not so sure about it. Even with being in the sun it will still be low. I take the Calm stuff for magnesium.

My doc (a GOOD 'un) always said to take D-3 supplementation until the days get much longer (~April), then taper off as one gets outside more & more.
He says if I'm active outside in the summer (I kayak swim, bike, etc.), there's no reason to "supplement" again until Fall.
