I'm going to the ER for a migraine, but would prefer they give me Mg than dilaudid, though idk what dose would be appropriate and I don't think they will either (since their answer has always been narcotics). I read about IV Mg for migraines recently but can't remember where, and I can't google right now because I'm too photophobic to be on the computer that long. Does anyone know quickly what dose might be effective so I can see if they'll do that instead? TY

SLH516 - in each of the following studies, 1 g of intravenous magnesium sulfate was used with good effect...

1. Efficacy of intravenous magnesium sulfate in the treatment of acute migraine attacks.

2. Intravenous magnesium sulfate rapidly alleviates headaches of various types

It's now several days later. But for future reference, if you keep an enema bag/bucket around + epsom salts, you could use epsom salts in an enema & retain it for 15-20 minutes. You could use 1 tsp-1

tablespoon of epsom salts to 2-4 cups of water. That would do the same thing as IV.

But you probably need to do magnesium orally at lower dosages to keep up a good level to help prevent migraines.

Saline enema
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups water

This duplicates the amount of salt in the blood.

If you do an enema that is saltier than this, it will draw fluid out of the cells that it comes into contact with.
So, an enema that is too salty will dehydrate you.

Use the same proportions when you gargle with salt water to treat a sore throat.
One half teaspoon salt and one cup water.
