Never tried that! I know magnesium works really well. It's pretty essential!

- Thanks a bunch. I feel like a need melatonin and it "reads" well but after various tries over time, it always clobbers me big time by day 3.
The additives in even the best ones always bothered me, too. All the dye and sweeteners, ick.
I never thought to look for an herbal melatonin. This looks very good and so glad to see they have a 0.3 mg -

Herbatonin® is a 100% natural plant extract from a particular variety of rice with a standardized level of melatonin per capsule of Herbatonin®.
Herbatonin® is the only plant based melatonin on the market. All other melatonin is derived from the pineal gland of animals or synthesized in a laboratory.

Nice to know about this melatonin product. Buhner says that plant melatonin is much more bioavailable to us, and much less of it can be used for effective dosing.

- I thought I might buy this but when it comes down to a tattered budget, that $25. might as well be a hundred. So, I got to thinking that if they use a food source in the Herbaltonin, why not just go for food, then.
A little food prior to bedtime also can help prevent awakening at 3 a.m. from low blood sugar. Low blood sugar is actually a common reason for waking up mid-cycle.
Foods With Melatonin [very good article and chart]
Excerpts:
. . . Tart (sour) cherries, especially the Montmorency variety, have been scientifically proven to have the largest concentration of melatonin -
such a significant amount that it is actually enough to produce positive results in the body according to Dr. Reiter who conducted research on tart cherries. . . .
. . . Walnuts appear to have the highest amount of melatonin after tart cherries . . . . -
Of course, there are many foods on that list. Still, dark fruits have many wonderful properties and really most are low on the glycemic index.
These can be working into just about any diet (if dealing with candida, just a little bit after a well balanced dinner - or some other melatonin rich food from the list such as WALNUTS).
Google, for more
"glycemic index" "Montmorency cherries" / or "dark cherries"
several good search result.
FYI: Costco carries Frozen Organic Dark Cherries, nothing added - 3 lbs. $11. -
