I'm looking for options for Jordan. He would like to try a non-prescription sleep aid.

He can not take Melatonin. When he takes it, he has sleep paralysis in the morning. Jordan has gone through so much and doesn't usually worry about new symptoms.

Sleep paralysis really scares him. He is afraid to go to sleep the next night.

Any ideas?

Pab,

When Dominic (8 years old) needed help sleeping (more calming down to get restful sleep). The neuro put him on Valium.

He was put on 2mg tablet but the tablet was to be cut in 4 pieces and he only took a 1/4 of the tablet. At the most he was on this for 6 to 8 weeks then taken off.

It helped "break a cycle" and allowed him to get the rest his body needed.

I know it is not a non perscription but we tried everything and nothing seemed to work.

Might try valerian.

Also, Good Earth brand "Tea for Sleep" contains valerian, said to be pharmaceutical quality herbals. Is caffeine free.

I posted to a similar question about 10 -15 days ago but tried to find it on a search so I could tell you where to find it, but was unsuccessful. I've been going to an acupuncturist for 3 years and have had about 3 periods where I couldn't sleep or I kept waking up at the exact same time every night. Anyway, each time I was given a mixture of essential oils for my particular circumstances and it solved my problem. I still use one every night for anxiety and fears which I believe are caused by Lyme. You don't ingest these oils, you put them on specific points. These past months, because I was having such a problem with anxiety he also had me try a product called TQ-RX which helped tremendously. He uses some of the other products in this company's line, i.e. for metal detox and some immune system support. It's expensive but I'm going to continue to use it on an as-needed basis because I slept wonderfully. And believe me I was really messed up. There are always options. Good luck.

Jordan has tried Valium and it makes him very dizzy.

I'll check out valerian. I know he won't drink a tea but will look for other forms.

Valerian helps my son, Pab..and I believe is low impact on the system otherwise.

From there, my next choice to investigate would be homeopathic remedy..if this stops working for him.
He uses it on as needed basis.

Have you tried benadryl? I use just 1/2 tab at bed time and don't have a hangover the next day.

I use two Benadryl tablets, and that has worked better than any of the prescription ones I tried (ambien, elavil, trazedone)over the last five years. I was waking every two hours without it, but with it (generic from Costco/Kirkland) I now can get 6-7 hr. sleep without waking. A sleep specialist told me it was fine to use it long term.

Jordan can't take Benadryl. He has the opposite effect of most people. He becomes very irritable and agitated.

I use GABA.

I used benedryl for years but it was causing urinary retention really badly. Though docs say it's non addicting I went through horrible anxiety, high blood pressure, panic attacks, rapid heart beats, etc. for several weeks.

My sleep study doc approved of this. It's an amino acid and it helps me get to sleep and stay asleep better. It's not as effective for me as the benedryl, but it is the only thing that doesn't stimulate me and has no side effects for me. Valerian stimulated me and gave me nightmares.

The only brand that does not stimulate me but helps me sleep is Solgar. As an adult I take 2000 mg a night.

Blessings - Angie
