Vancomycin is a last resort drug. I was on it for one week only.

I had one dose of IV vanco during a knee surgery. I did not know that I had lyme at the time.
I ended up in a herx for 5 days starting 12 days after the surgery. I had incredible nerve pain all over my body. If I had died, it would have been OK with me.
My orthopedic surgeon had no idea what was going on. "I do knees and shoulders. I have no idea what is going on with you."
As it turns out, I had lyme disease. It was latent in my body. He activated it with a steroid shot. I started to fall apart 3 weeks after that. No one knew what was going on.
Had a herx to the IV vanco. No one knew what was going on.
I'm trying to educate the orthopedic doctors!

I had a continuous vanco drip for one week in the hospital. (They'd refresh the bag 3x daily). I was really tired, but the feeling came back in my extremities. All my symptoms returned when I was taken off of it. I liked it a lot more than Rocephin and Doxy.

I was on vacomycin for a few months. It was quite a few years ago so don't remember much. I know it knocked me down good.
It is tough to handle but suppose to be very effective.
I remember my nurse coming out what seemed like almost every day but probably was less to do a peak and trough(sp?) to make sure the levels were okay.
I believe blood is drawn before the dose and then after. Really forget.
I think they took me off of it because it is a "last resort" antibotic and the docs. got nervous.
I didn't know much at that time too sick. Good luck with your therapy. Just be careful and make sure that bloodwork is done properly.
