I've been on doxy for only 3 weeks (400 mg/day). I can't tell if it is really working...somethings are better some worst. My LLMD wants me to give it another few weeks and then try amoxicillin (1500 mg/day). He feels that amoxicillin may be better since my symptoms are neuro (tremors, sound sensitivity). What do you all think regarding this switch? Does amoxicillin penetrate the CNS better?

Jenny, you ended up with "3" identical posts on the board. May I suggest you go to the two, and EDIT/pencil icon. DELETE SUBJECT ... show dupllicate post, and DELETE ALL TEXT in it. This way you have all replies in 1 area; not 2.
I'm sorry I don't know anything about the above, but bringing this up for others knowledgeable on it.

Amoxy in high doses penetrates the blood brain barrier, esp. in presence of infection. I believe it's mentioned in ILADS treatment guidelines. I was on it for several months in the beginning, with Probenecid at the same time (keeps levels higher in your blood). I was on 3000 mg per day.
It's really a quite common regimen. Produces heckuva herx reaction, levelling out eventually to tolerable for me.
MUCH easier on the tummy than Doxy and you'll be relieved to be able to see the spring sunshine.
Be sure to keep on top of your probiotics.
Good luck to you!

I used Amoxicillin for several months in doses that varied from 4 to 27 g/day. The doses were somehow larger than the dose of yours . No question about it that it killed a lot of bugs. But eventually I have relapsed while on it.

my LLMD says that although it is NOT a cephalosporin, Amoxy actually works more like a cephalosporin (rocephin, ceftin, etc) than other abx. It has more ability to cross bb barrier and get into cells.
I havent read this anywhere though...just went off what he said---he is a pharmacist so I trust he knows HOW these drugs work...I know I DONT!
I am on 3,000mg plus probenecid like michelle m!
(coz we got the same great doc!)

Amoxy will penitrate well at high doses it will kill spirochetes but no effect on cysts or blebs if you use it use flagyl or another of the azoles group to get at the other forms.
Also doxy is suppose to penitrate well at High doses. BBB

I have had nero lyme for 18 years. I took amoxy and probenicid for two years, went off and was symptom free for 6 years and relapsed. I am now on bicillin La. It works much better than amoxy at least for me. If I had to do it over again , I wish I had been on the bicillin in the beginning.

Amoxicillin can be given the dose for neuro syphillis, uo to 16,000 mg/day. Most of us start at 3,000 mg per day, and go up to 6,000 plys Augmentin to keep blood levels up, and higher doses too. 1,500 per day is a tiny dose.
