I'm concerned.
I want to continue having my husband soak down everything in sight outside to protect us from ticks. It's very high risk here.
I'm worried about two things, though, both of which are medical in nature.
Do you know if Sevin can cause the ticks to mutate, possibly with strains of TBDs unknown before? I worry about getting an even worse set of these scourges!
Also, I can't imagine that this is really safe, being dragged in on shoes and clothes to a carpeted trailer. I have MCS and don't want more!
But I don't want the risk. We are inundated with mice, other small mammals, deer, and birds here. We're five-and-a-half miles into the woods. Moving would not be an option, and you know that it doesn't matter if you're in the country, suburbs, or city anyway.

My husband was just told last week at Home Depot, that Sevin is no more. They have been bought by another company and are making something under another name. All he remembers is Ortho-something.
The clerk told him this stuff the new company is making is suppose to be great. We'll see.
Anybody else know the name of this new product? I'll check out Home Depot myself this week and see what I can find.

Hmm. I know the chemical is carbaryl. Didn't know it changed names from Sevin to whatever.
I hope you find it. I hope we do, too! I just found out that we need more, also.

If you are so remote in the woods, then you are clearly on well water.
Everything you put on your soil, you later drink and absorb through your skin when bathing.
Furthermore, you are inhaling it.
Check out Diatenatious Earth. It is a powder like Sevin dust but made from crushed seashells. It works against insects by slicing them open and is not toxic. I live on a farm and sprinkle it around the exterior of my home to keep insects out. Very effective.
Do wear a mask when spreading it though as you can inhale it into your lungs.

I did think about the well-water issue. We have a community well, and it's uphill from our property, though.
I will consult the doctor. He is a holistic doctor.

The army uses permethrin to soak clothes. I also understand it is used in the clothing (Land's End or LLBean, not sure which one) that is treated for ticks and insects. I have used it to spray the perimeter of my yard, but I now understand it is toxic to honeybees.

permethrin is also toxic to humans and your pets. Read the cautions on a bottle of dip for your dog. "Dont' inhale it, Don't let it touch your skin. Causes liver damage, etc" and we are dousing our poor dogs in it and leaving it on them without rinsing.
I guess the FDA standard for safety is "If you don't drop dead immediately and if the manufacturer pads our pockets well enough, we will approve it".

I can't use anything but natural repellent due to MCS. And I won't be using Sevin anymore. I spoke with my LLPA about it.
I like the comment about the FDA! The padding of the pockets: don't even get me started! I could go on and on about the selling out of the middle/working classes, NAFTA, CAFTA (in other words SHAFTA), illegal immigrants getting benefits I need (what part of illegal don't our politicians understand?!), along with the sad state of national "security," ridiculous gas prices, etc. But this is Medical Forum.
Phew! It's just a soap-box issue for me. What it all has in common, though: the Big Corporate Business paying off the politicians that work like two freakin' days per year.
