I posted this in a couple of threads but I think it deserves it's own topic. I had a rare allergic reaction to doxy, discovered two weeks into treatment - not external like hives, but like hives on the inside, fluid collecting and bloating me, making my legs swell so much (pitting edema at least 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep) that compression stockings didn't even slow it down.
I had pain and pressure behind my eyes, blurry vision, I could not focus on anything close and even distance vision was blurry, which is not the case usually.
Numerous other symptoms, most of which are starting to resolve now that I'm off doxy, my eyes are still the worst, but there's some improvment so I have hopes that this isn't permanent. I am waiting for test results to come back on kidney function, etc., I'll post if there's anything unusual.
This is a very rare allergic reaction, so people and doctors may not be aware of it, but I think it's important to tell people who may be suffering the same symptoms and not know why. I was beating myself up because I felt like I was gaining weight at an alarming rate, even though my diet hadn't changed. I cannot believe how much better (and lighter) I feel after just 24 hours without a dose. Pay attention to your symptoms, pitting edema out of nowhere is a bad sign that something isn't working correctly, and it needs to be addressed with your doctor ASAP.

Yes, thanks for sharing.
Awesome screen name-hope it's not too true.
Yes, drs could do a much better job explaining any dangerous side effects before one starts a medication.
One of our drs did mention that a particular drug could cause agitation and the like in 2-3% of cases. My daughter had this reaction and we knew to take her off immediately. I found out however, after taking a med for a yr or 2 that you have to watch out for a particular cluster of symptoms the first couple days that can be fatal. Thanks a lot, right?
Sorry you are in that tiny percent that gets these reactions. Hope you feel better and thanks again.

Well the good news is the bloodwork and urinalysis both came back normal, so no kidney damage. My eyes are still bugging me, hard to focus on things but the pressure behind then has decreased as the day has gone on, I'm hoping with another good night's sleep I'll wake up to clear vision.
Truth be told, if the doctor had told me 'there's a remote chance of a strange allergic reaction', I probably still would have taken the doxy, I'm desperate to get rid of this rigor mortis. Lucky me to be so, ahem, "unique"....

Just wanted to pass along some thoughts. Have you considered getting a lymph drainage massage to help move the extra fluid? Also there are some herbs that also promote lymph drainage, red root tincture is one that is mentioned here from time to time (do a search for details).
Finally, ELF Labs makes the Light Beam Generator that promotes lymph flow. Its a machine. You may want to contact them to find a practitioner in your area. lightbeamgenerator.com or google ELF labs.
Hope you find relief soon.

Wow, this is very enlightening!!! I was on Doxy and after 10 days of bloating and looking like I was 8 mos. pregnant and the squeezing of the head I stopped taking it. If I had known about taking a probiotic with it then maybe I could have gotten rid of this Lyme up front. There is so much wonderful information on this website and I am so glad that I found you good people. Mary
