Hi,

I was wondering if people doing Buhner's
or Zhang's protocol have experienced any
sun sensitivity on the herbs.

I've been on antibiotics for three years. They've
helped some, but I'd say I haven't made much
progress over the past year. Since
starting the antibiotics I've had severe sun
sensitivity. I get burnt unless it is pitch
dark outside. No light sensitivity, like regular
lights hurting my eyes, but what feels like a sun
burn.

I'm thinking of switching to an herbal protocol--
probably Buhners, although I've also been looking
into Zhang's--in hopes of seeing the sun again
some day.

Welcome, I'm sending you a private message, pm, of newbie links/advise.

Not on herbal supplements, so I can't answer you.

DOXY really affected me eyesight and made me burn outside driving to LLMD appts. Wear long sleeves, cotton gloves, long pants in car covering yourself well.

I wear a floppy hat that covers my checks and forehead too. Bettyg [Big Grin] [Cool]

Below is a list of drugs associated with sun sensitivity. The worst offenders, in my experience, are the tetracyclines (including doxycycline, minocycline, doryx) although I became photosensitive with others.

I had no luck at all with the Zhang protocol as of 2002. I'm using the Buhner protocol now, as a follow on to longterm abx treatment for LD/Co. The abx may have done the job, so I dunno if I can ever evaluate the effectiveness of the B. stuff, but I feel safer on it. Herbs can cause photosensitivity (St. John's Wort is notorious for it) so check carefully. I've had no photosensitivity on the core B. protocol. for LD.

Drugs Associated with Photosensitivity Reactions (NOT a comprehensive list)

Antibiotics
Doxycycline (Vibramycin and others)
Floxin
Minocycline
Tetracycline
Trimethoprim
(Sulfur -- addition from another list)

Disease-Modifying Agents (to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus)
Dapsone
Gold
Hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil)
Methotrexate
Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)

NSAIDs
Piroxicam (Feldene)
Ibuprofen (less likely)
Naproxen and others

Antihypertensives
Captopril
Diltiazem
Methyldopa
Nifedipine

Hypoglycemics
Glipizide
Glyburide
Tolbutamide

Antidepressants
Amitriptyline
Desipramine
Doxepin
Imipramine
Nortriptyline
Trazodone

Antihistamines
Benadryl and others

Diuretics
Chlorothiazide (Diuril)
Furosemide (Lasix)
Hydrochlorothiazide

Others
Oral contraceptives
Xanax
Sun Sensitivity and Drugs

Good luck

I don't think herbs cause problem with sun like some abx. Never read that, that I remember (at least Buhner's herbs and most common herbs used for lyme).

I had light sensitivity (light caused me pain in the eyes or sometimes extreme bad feeling, like fatigue) and got better with herbs (Buhner plus others), I think I'm down to zero sensitivity for the moment.

I can take sun, the only thing that makes me stop being under the sun is excessive heat. But that's exactly like before lyme.

Hope this helps.

I have sun sensitivity while taking doxycycline and minocycline, and no sensitivity while on Buhner's protocol.

Same for me as SweetPea. Sensitivity on ABX...... no sensitivity on Buhner Core Protocol.

Thanks for the information, everyone! That's
encouraging to hear, Sweetpea and Robi.

It doesn't seem to matter what Abx I take,
I burn. I cover up EVERYTHING. I wear a
hat and face mask and I still burn. I get burnt
through windows. [Mad] Doxy and Zithromax
did seem the worst, though.

Thanks again!
