to supplement or not to supplement...

So how do you know what to do when the lyme community is so divided? Both sides have very compelling arguments.

Is there some way to take a poll? Dr. D vs. ILADS?

I just want to get better.

The way I look at is this. ONE dr that I know of says you shouldn't take supplements while treating Lyme.

ONE

I'll stay with what works for me and for what works for the majority.

There's no controversy if you ask me.

Yes, do what works.. And it is confusing how
do you work with that Dr. if he insists on you
not taking supplements. (I read your other post)

NOt to confuse matters - just posting this
in case you missed it. Food for thought
(and maybe food for other things as well)

BTW, what is Dr. D's compelling argument, reason
not to supplement?

i have seen 2 different LLDocs one had me on at least 20 supplements, plus a 2 part probotic, and the one that i am currently seeing has me on a probotic only in addition to the abx.

my doc is ILADS and says save your money--the jury is still out about suppliments helping lymies.

There are no HARD studies to prove it either way. So he says if ya wanna take, just make sure they dont interfere with meds and if you dont, your wallet will be that much fatter.

I personally have never noticed a difference (good or bad) with many high quality suppliments, vitamins and minerals. I know this puts me in the minority here. I am just telling my experience.

I do take a few different good probiotics and I do believe and have witnessed first hand the power of herbs--so i dont lump those into vitamin and mineral supps.

Personally I cannot notice any physical difference when I am taking alot of supplements when compared to when I am not.

Maybe it is making a difference at the cellular level, but I certainly am not noticing anything... I would like to see some solid evidence that it is beneficial for us before I invest my time and money into it.

I think whether supplements help you or not depends very much on whether you get the right supplements for YOU. Everyone is different and has different problems and needs. In any case, I beleive that magnesium is essential as are many minerals for anyone with lyme. Without them, we risk developing more illnesses like diabetes.

I do know that I have malabsorption. This means I don't absorb nutrients from my food very well. I personally do much better on supplements. My brother, also ill, ends up in the hospital when he doesn't take appropriate minerals and supplements. He also feels much better on them than off of them.

I take a LOT of supplements via muscle testing. I find that I am able to be on abx without being a lot sicker than I was before. Amazing to both me and my doctor. In the past, abx made me extremely ill.

I'm am very pleased with the results of using supplements and I feel that I am much more likely to be able to manage long term abx if I take them.

That said, I am very careful to take all supplements away from abx.

This is just my little old opinion as a patient with lyme disease that has been in treatment for 6 years.

I am using the term supplements to cover the enitre gamit of natural stuff vitamins herbs ect.

I think like abx lyme treatment supplements is probaly very individualized. And our needs may change as our treatment progresses / regregresses. What helped 1 year ago may not be helpful now.

I think when on abx (especially long term like many of us are) supplements can be utilized to counteract the negative impact the abx have on our system. And I do mean this beyond standard probotics.

I also think it is very dangerous to just start randomly taking lots of supplements without finding out

1. if there is any interactions to any rx or other supplement you are taking 2. how toxic they can be (like if they are hard on your liver etc)

I personally think I would have a huge heap of issues if I hadn't taking at least some of the supplements I have over the years.

But like I said this is just my expereince with treatment.

Here's what I know:

One year ago, I was barely able to walk and only able to minimally function. I had a "window" of about 2, maybe 3, good hours in a day, and that was on a good day. And honestly, those "good" hours really weren't very good.

Now, I'm back in an office four days a week, working full days as a consultant. In addition, I have private clients two other days for at least a portion of the day.

My thinking has cleared up, my body is healing.

I take antibiotics and supplements and have since starting treatment.

I'm not about to change what's working for me!

I'm very deficient in amino acids. So I'm taking lots of amino acid supplements. I'm also taking other minerals I'm deficient in including magnesium, zinc and B-Vitamins.

Other supplements are recommended by my doctor because they are helping with the issues caused by the amino acid deficiency.

I'm trying some pain supplements, and can't say I notice a difference. So I probably won't continue after I finish the current bottles.

Since I've started taking amino acids and the vitamins/minerals, my skin has changed. I really feel I look two years younger. Hey, doesn't help the Lyme but makes me happy.
