HI,
please can anyone offer advice on rapid heart rate (tachycardia) from ortho intolerance. - what meds/natural products help?

I'm on florinef which helps loads -reduced sitting/standing heart rate to 100bpm.

pre florinef HR sitting/standing 120-130 bpm

MY LLMD prx atenolol but this only makes it worse -drops the BP so the heart rate increases!!

i find exercising helps as it increases BP. fortunately i do have good physical energy so i run/walk/swim everyday -i spend my days cotinually exercising to keep up the BP or I lie down to study -otherwise if i try doing anything sitting/standing i'm exhausted from such a high HR. - i'd love to just be able to sit a table to eat!!

any advice on meds greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Liz

I have tachycardia also. It is caused by a defect in the heart timer that regulates the beats per minute. Also, high stress levels can cause similar problem.

I have one of the top heart specialist in the country and he gave me Cartia XT 240 mg. I take it once a day and problem is solved. I will have to take it for the rest of my life...

I also have to take Coumadin 2.5 or 5mg a day. This is tricky stuff to take. Have to be careful about eating green veggies like broccoli. The purpose of Coumadin is to thin the blood so to minimize the danger of clots...

I can exercise and live a normal life now...

There is a procedure that has a 50% chance of fixing the problem but, it is risky. My doc says as long as medication controls the problem, it is best to avoid the risky procedure....

The danger is that when a heart beats too fast the blood can't move fast enough and it will puddle and start to coagulate. This causes a high danger of stroke (brain vessels get plugged by the clot).

This happened to me. I was lucky I recovered 100% after a week in hospital and a MAJOR headache.
(left side was very weak for awhile)

Just a note: I have low blood pressure (110/70)but I have always had it...

I don't have lyme, but my wife had it for 20 years and is now cured. I like to keep up with the board. I have learned a lot here...

Hi Tj,

thanks for the reply. i'm sorry to hear you too suffer from tacycardia

thanks for all the info on what meds you take. i'm guessing my tachycardia is slightly different as caused by ortho intolerance?? & only elevated when sitting/standing

that's great news to hear your wife has been cured from lyme -that's what we love to hear [Smile]

anyone else have any suggestions for other meds or natural products to control rapid heart on standing?

thanks,
Liz

Liz,

Take a look at Lef.org some informative articles
on tachycardia. Some suggestions fish oil, hawthorn, magnesium, Co-Q10. Of course check with the Dr. first.

Liz,

Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything that has helped. This seems to be a particulary difficult condition to treat (at least from my own experience and according to my cardiologist).

But did want to let you know, for what it is worth, that I have taken three of the supplements mentioned - fish oil, coq10 and magnesium for a long time and they have had no impact at all on this condition for me. Doesn't necessarily mean it won't for you, but just thought I would let you know my experience.

Thanks Lynne & MarsyNY for suggestions on tachycardia.

i am already taking coQ10,fish oil & mag.-not sure if they are helping or not?

Lynne -like you say NMH & tachycardia seem to be a difficult area to treat - so i guess we've just got to stick out the lyme tx & hope it cures itself! [confused]

Thanks again for replies,

anyone else had success with meds to help tachycardia due to ortho intolerance?

Liz

I have a much lower high heart rate - usually in the 90's. My doctor is treating me with B-12, folic acid, Vitamin C and amino acids (which I am deficient in).

I haven't noticed much of a difference, although my energy is up. And my skin looks great. Not heart related though.

Hi Liz, Sorry to hear you have been having trouble with rapid heartrate - I know all about that!

I've been on atenolol for years with the rapid heartrate. When I was first told to take atenolol they had me taking a fairly high dose, which I couldn't tolerate at all. However, at a small dose I do quite well. You didn't mention how much you were taking, but maybe reducing the amount is a possibility? I currently take 12.5 mg, twice a day.

Also, just because you can't tolerate one beta blocker doesn't mean another one wouldn't work for you. I've heard of people having to try different ones before finding the right medication. Unfortunately it seems there is a lot of trial and error for us [Frown]

Also, have you looked on Dinet's site, they have a great list of things that help - http://www.dinet.org/what_helps.htm

good luck,
Pam

when i tried atenolol i took 25mg once day & made me feel so lethargic as dropped BP back down again so defeated purpose of taking florinef!!

anyone had success with another beta blocker?(not atenolol)

are beta blockers the only med used to control rapid heart rate?

Thanks again for replies,

Hi Liz,

Along with the atenolol I take a low dose of zoloft, which is supposed to help regulate the ANS. My doctor explains that I can increase the zoloft when I need help with squeezing the veins a little more than normal.

Another drug that people often take is midodrine. That didn't work well for me, but then either did Florinef [Wink]

Also, even though I've been on the atenolol for years, 25 mg at one time is still way too much for me and will also make me feel tired. You might want to try breaking the pill in half, or even in fourths to see if that is more tolerable for you.

Other than that I keep my fluids up with water and gatorade. And I take a magnesium/potassium combo daily.

hth, Pam

Hey Liz...

Each beta blocker is different. I first tried metoprolol and it dropped my BP...I tried atenolol and it works perfectly for me. You might try metoprolol or Toprol. Toprol also makes extended release tabs to its released slowly so it wont give you the big BP drop. Sometimes you have to play around with the time you take it too. Toprol at night before bed might work good for you. When you wake up it should help the BP that morning. You may need more florinef temporarily as you adjust to the beta blocker. Also, more magnesium...and creatine possibly. For me the best combo was Atenolol 50 mg twice a day, zoloft 50 mg per day and florinef .1 mg per day and then play around with times. You may need less of one, more of the other. It will work out! Sounds like you just need some tweaking of the protocol. [Smile]
