Hello all, I am taking 600mg of doxy and was wondering what other coinfections would this treat? I am seeing my LLMD in a month, at which point I will ask him about coinfections, but at this time I don't know if I have any.

hey there-
i am pretty sure it will help w bart, but not so much babs.
just a word of advice, see if your doc is willing to treat co infections w/o positive testing
there are over 50 strains of babs but most labs only test for 2. bartonella testing is flawed as well as lyme as i am sure you know.

Doxy is often used for ehrlichia (the bug)/ehrlichiosis (the co-infection). Some types can be fatal within a week if not treated soon enough, hence the reason it's usually given first for a tick bite--for lyme and/or ehrlichiosis. Doxy alone didn't stop my lyme from progressing, even at an above average dose, but it may have nailed any ehrlichia. The fever stopped, at least.
I got abx within a week of my tickbite, but kept worsening till my doc used a combo of abx--one that could go intra-cellular, one outer-cellular, and one for the cell-wall deficient & "cyst" forms. It's important at least one of the abx penetrate the blood brain barrier also. It has been a long road for me, even with early and above average dose abx. Doxy alone, then amoxicillin alone did not stop it from worsening. Two months of IV Rocephin was helpful, but even that did not stop it completely, and we had to continue on orals afterwards.
Some strains of lyme seem harder to eradicate than others, and the condition of one's own immune system is also important as to outcome. Everyone's treatment has to be individualized accordingly. Good luck!
