I had sinus surgery on Tuesday of this week. Everything was fine, except for a little pain. I coughed so much upon waking from the anesthesia that my ribs hurt the next day [yesterday].
By the time I went to bed last night my thighs were hurting when I tried to sit down or get up.
Then my throat hurt when swallowing. My torso continued to hurt and was worse than it was that morning. Had trouble getting up from the couch without a lot of pain.
During the night last night I needed to get up and could hardly get myself out of bed due to the all over body pain.
My husband had to help me get out of bed just a few minutes ago. I can barely walk because of the pain in my thighs and my calves.
What happened!???? Is this RSD??? It does not hurt to be touched, but hurts to move muscles. Typing isn't "too" bad.
I called the doctor. Waiting to hear back.

I don't know, but I would guess a herx- it sounds like a post-surgery abx herx to me!!! Also, could be the aches from when they move you around when you are under anethethesia (sp!). They are not always gentle. Once I came out from surgery with a chipped tooth because they had let my sleeping jaw slap closed and a tooth chipped. They are not always as gentle as they should be. Maybe your sleeping muscles got tense? I don't know!!! I just hope you feel better soon. Best wishes, Sarah

Herx? Any extra pain meds laying around?
Taking your magnesium?
I sure hope this passes for you. Let us know what the doctor thinks.

tutu, I'm so sorry you are in pain.:-( It's possible that all that coughing caused overall muscle pain, it could certainly cause a sore throat. As I recall, you had the fibro diagnosis before you found out you had lyme and having a similar diagnosis, I find that my muscles get sore from the weirdest things.
I've also noticed that certain abx will cause a surge of soreness in some muscles like recently, omnicef has caused by hips and legs to be VERY sore when they weren't bothering me much for quite awhile.
I hope you feel better soon.

I have expressed this type of herx/lyme reaction to almost every doc.
Our immune systems stink. Any procedure, slightly invasive to our membranous tissues i.e., gums, ears, eyes, etc is the opening of symptoms.
My new "babs buddy" had implants done a year ago and has incredible burning symptoms throughout her gums and ears.
I had 2 crowns re-done and it felt like someone was still doing the work for at least one week.
We do not heal easily when infected with simple viruses (well, they used to be simple before lyme) so when we are inviting a procedure to occur on our systems, this opens up the whole lyme thing again.
The heightened sensitivity and all.
I would definitely notify all docs before procedure.
Sorry you're feeling crappy TuTu.
Sincerely,
Lisa

"I" am so sorry to hear of this.
Me thinks magnesium would be preferable to the laxative stuff.
Maybe take some calcium WITH it since the ratio is more important than the quanity itself.
Magnesium is BEST taken to tolerance,,,you know THAT!! BUT it will relax those tight muscles.
I concur with the coughing bit,,,sounds promising.
What I really FEAR is that your sinus tooth areas are probably the BEST hiding ground for Keets!! AND you stirred them up,,,
Thinking strong abx for a little while MAY kill them off NOW!!! keflex isnt THAT strong,,,get some super whammy, double duty strength stuff and GO for it!!
And hop back on that zango bandwagon,, double dose for a while!!
Hoping and praying things will reslove QUICKLY!!! remaining--just don--

Surgery = steroids w/anesthesia to subdue the immune response to the surgical "invasion".
The critters are going berserk & hopefully it is the Herx from the ABX fighting them.
Eat avocados they are the only thing that seems to work for my dad to keep his digestive system moving properly with his massive pain meds.
He takes a stool softener+stimulant laxative (store brand MUCH cheaper & works just as well) and eats 1/2 to 1 avocado/day. If you can't take avocado, eat fiber rich foods with plenty of good fats like olive oil.
Are you taking ANY other medications? I can look for interactions?
ADVERSE REACTIONS Gastrointestinal -- Onset of pseudomembranous colitis may occur during or after antibacterial treatment. (See WARNINGS.) Nausea and vomiting have been reported rarely. The most frequent side effect has been diarrhea. It was very rarely severe enough to warrant cessation of therapy.
Dyspepsia, gastritis, and abdominal pain have also occurred. As with some penicillins and some other cephalosporins, transient hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice have been reported rarely.
Hypersensitivity -- Allergic reactions in the form of rash, urticaria, angioedema, and, rarely, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis have been observed. These reactions usually subsided upon discontinuation of the drug.
In some of these reactions, supportive therapy may be necessary. Anaphylaxis has also been reported.
Other reactions have included genital and anal pruritus, genital moniliasis, vaginitis and vaginal discharge, dizziness, fatigue, headache, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, arthralgia, arthritis, and joint disorder.
Reversible interstitial nephritis has been reported rarely. Eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and slight elevations in AST and ALT have been reported.
In addition to the adverse reactions listed above that have been observed in patients treated with Keflex, the following adverse reactions and altered laboratory tests have been reported for cephalosporin class antibiotics:
Several cephalosporins have been implicated in triggering seizures, particularly in patients with renal impairment when the dosage was not reduced (see INDICATIONS AND USAGE and PRECAUTIONS, General).
If seizures associated with drug therapy should occur, the drug should be discontinued. Anticonvulsant therapy can be given if clinically indicated.
Do you have any swelling in the feet/ankles or any other symptoms besides severe muscle pain?
TuTu, I'm SO sorry this is happening to you. You were supposed to be getting "all better"!
hugs & prayers,
Ali

Yes, I'm taking magnesium. Tons of it and calcium too. Dr wanted me off all supplements 2 wks before and 2 wks after surgery.
I did NOT do that. I just made sure I wasn't taking anything that would thin the blood. I started back on my Rutozyme this morning. [it can thin the blood]
No way I was going to stop the Xango....so I think I'd better increase it... bigtime!
I've never been so miserable.... or maybe I have...( ) I've never had THIS much muscle pain.
I can't even get the chicken out of the refrigerator for lunch. It's in a large heavy pot. Not sure I can spoon it out either...maybe.

I'm praying it's a short-lived herx. I can't believe the pain is so bad.
Thanks tree, improver, six, Geneal, Terry, Sarah, Byron, Kathy, don, and Lisa. Did I miss anyone??

Anyone have good ideas for detoxing??
ps.. They did not give me steroids. The nurse even reiterated that they did as I asked about the steroids. The anesthesiologist told me he would not give them to me, per my request.

I can remember feeling very sore after a partial thyroidectomy. That was before Lyme treatment because I did not know I had Lyme.
I think alot of the pain is just the surgery. I think they position our bodies on the table in weird ways and it is very cold in the operating rooms, no wonder our muscles are screaming afterwards - it is like a workout that you feel a day later.
A friend of mine (who does not have Lyme, but has brain cancer), went under last week for a biopsy. The next day he was complaining about how his whole body hurt him and he didn't understand why. Said it felt like you do when you get the flu. It was from the surgery.
He took 600mg ibuprofen and felt much better.

Oh yeah, it helps me poop too. Pooping is a must at this stage. Don't want the body reabsorbing toxins back into the system right now.

Hi Lymetoo, Sinus surgery (which I had many years ago) is painful in itself.
Maybe it is making your body "over react" to the pain as well.
I hope the additional symptoms fade quickly, I hate saying it and I am sure you know anyway, that surgery can re-activate or make LD worse. I pray that is not the case.

Tootskie!!!
These are probably problems related to the swelling in the sinus cavities.
The best person to discuss these symptoms would be your surgeon. I am sure he sees these same symptoms quite frequently following this procedure.
Also the location of legs...down from the sinus, could indicate poor Lymphatic drainage, always an important factor when inflammation is present...especially after surgery.
RLS??? I don't think so...check this out:
Medications that contribute to Restless Leg syndrome
Also, if you lost a lot of blood, you might be Iron Deficient...can also cause RLS symptoms.
Get better TuTu. How is Music Man doing? Ask him to take you out for a long walk to get those leg muscles working...this will help get rid on any edema present.

I didn't read all the other posts so forgive me if I'm repeating something.
If they did NOT give you steroids, your body would likely have a pretty big immune reaction to the trauma of the surgery. Similar to if someone had just attacked you with a knife. Your body is fighting.
I think you will be OK. I hope & pray that you will be. I'm glad that you have avocados. I hope that they help.

I'm so sorry you're going through all this! I'm still praying it will get better for you.
The sore throat is the only thing I can vouch for. With every surgery I had (with anesthesia) I had one! They put a tube down your throat for...breathing, monitoring??
For something or other anyway. Makes your throat sore and it should go away pretty soon.
I don't know if I would take the Ketek right now, but Dr C would know which way to go.
posted
Keflex, not ketek. WEll, if I don't take it, I could have a brewing infection in there. Catch 22.
Could somebody come over and clean out my tub?? Actually, I don't think I could get in or out of it. I can't even lie down because it's too painful to get up and down.
Meg...the pain in the throat is muscle pain when trying to swallow. Not really a sore throat.
But yes, they did put a tube down my throat. He told me he would do that.

Anytime the body has anesthesia, the body has to detox it from all its cells. Long ago a doctor told me that can take up to a year. Hopefully, now the drugs are not as hard to clear out and with certain methods it can clear more quickly and safely.
I hope you find gentle detox methods and can manage a warm bath in epson salts to draw out some stuff.

I know you already googled RSD and determined you didn't fit the criteria, but just to further allay your concerns, your reaction definitely doesn't match the triggering of RSD... my sister's had RSD for years and recently went to Germany for a ketamine coma procedure... your situation doesn't seem to indicate RSD (or CRPS as it may be referred to) whatsoever from the extent of my knowledge of the disease and how it manifests itself...
while surgical procedures can trigger RSD, I'd expect the RSD to be localized to the area of the surgery, at least at first though it could spread throughout the body down the road... secondly, RSD is a progressive disease once it is triggered, and I don't think the onset of it typically, if ever, presents itself in the extreme pains you experienced right after the procedure, which seems to be more of a reaction to the procedure itself for whatever other reason...
RSD also generally includes specific types of pain including hypersensitivity (extreme sensitivity to touch), temperature sensitive pain, etc... lastly, your other symptoms such as coughing vehemently and your throat closing point towards your body reacting for some other reason to the procedure and not being an indication of the triggering of RSD...
hope you feel better, just wanted to let you know you shouldn't be concerned in this regard

Hey Lymetoo,
I have had muscle herxes when i was first sick and on doxy.
Also when i had my hydrodestention, all my muscles in my legs and pelvis killed!...i could barely walk. The dr told me i was flailing around as i was being put under. One day I was stiff and sore and a few days later it just vanished, it was so odd.
I also think the anesthesia affects us differently since we have lyme.
I hope this wears off for you soon, maybe try some light stretches.
Hang in there

Tutu,
I hope you are feeling better today.
Try eating raw for a couple of days. That should get your bowels moving again and will give your body a burst of nutrients.
A couple favorites of mine.
1-Pineapple with plain yogurt (any fruit. But pineapple is great for inflamation)
2-grated apple, carrots, cabbage and raisens. This needs no dressing.
3-brocoli and cauliflower mixed with tahini dressing and minced fresh garlic. You'll stink but that garlic should give bacteria a run for its money.
Fresh veggie juices like
4-5 carrots 2 stalks celery handful of spinach or brocoli or green pepper 1/4" ginger root 1-2 cloves garlic
Sure hope you feel better soon!

Ms. Lymetoo,
Put a plastic chair into that shower girl!
Sit and take a nice long shower.
Your throat will hurt from bein intubated.
That should pass.
You probably have some drainage from your sinus' also going down your throat.
Probably irritating the heck out of it.
Drink tons of water.
Get your doc to call you in some different pain meds if possible.
I sure hate that you feel so poorly.
Give us an update.

So sorry you are going through this post-surgery stuff!
I've experienced a three-day delay in reacting to anesthesia with each of two surgeries. Upon awakening I was hyper and calling bunches of folks to say that I was okay. By day three, everything hurt and I became shakey, emotional and exhausted.
I know that the surgery tables are really narrow and my body was stiff and achey for months. Do we not fully go out during surgery and brace our bodies against falling off the durn tables?
I'm wondering whether the fungus that was removed from your sinus cavaties went free-radical on you and you are in a yeast hell of sorts. I'd dabble in the de-yeasting world for now...
Wish I had sage words of advice. Epsom salts and flaxseed heating pads and rest were what I sought besides drinking a lot of water and giving myself permission to vegetate.
Much love with gentle, pain-free hugs,

Oh great... more pain... as though you didn't have enough already!
Hope this is not a true setback, but simply a detox issue, and that you are feeling better soon.

Sorry you're feeling so bad. I would think it's the anesthesia. Lymies don't react well to anesthesia I don't think.

Thanks everyone. I read every single response and I thank you for all of the advice.
I'm about 5-10% better today and I'll celebrate that!! I still have a lot of pain getting up and down but can walk a lot better.
I'm still taking hydrocodone and have added chlorella since yesterday. I upped my cortef yesterday and will take more today and again tomorrow. Then go back to my usual dosage if I'm feeling better.
Thanks for the recipes, luvs! I don't have many of the ingredients and no blender, but will take your ideas and use what I can.
Can you believe we have to move this month??? My poor husband has his work cut out for him.
I did manage to go with him today and see the apartment I believe we will move into. Still crunching numbers over here to make sure we can do it.
Thanks again everyone for caring. It means a lot to me!

Lymetoo,
Glad to hear you are feeling a tiny bit better. Sure makes you wish you could have had a video tape of them doing your surgery to find out what really went on to make you so sore, huh?
And then a move on top of all this? Wow... pain AND stress. Sending lots of positive vibes your way and please continue to keep us posted.

Hi TuTu,
SO sorry to hear that you are not feeling well!!! But happy to hear that you are already feeling a bit better!
Hope you can get in that bathtub or shower, however possible! Warm water is one of the few surefire things for my muscle aches. Sure sounds like the anaesthesia, or a muscle herx....or they had you playing soccer while you were out.
I trust that the operation was a complete success in every other way, and you are freed from ever thinking about your sinuses again after this heals!!!
Hey, and this sounds like a great time to get all your friends to help with your upcoming move! Eat well, rest alot, and get better soon!

Hi, Tutu -
I checked back in here tonight to see how you were doing. Glad there is some improvement but I was sure hoping for more.
Did your doc ever call you back about this?
I know the effect of 'trauma' can be huge. And just because you were asleep during the procedure doesn't mean your body didn't know what was going on. I think it is letting you know that it wasn't fooled.
It's Xango on the rocks for you this evening, young lady. I do hope we hear of more improvement by tomorrow.
All the best,

You are renting then since you have to move....so sorry!
just hope we don't have any typical blizzards/ice storms on top of everything else for you.

Hi Tutu - surgery's hard to go through. I hope you'll be gradually feeling better. Try to do some things you enjoy doing, just little stuff.

Just read the first post. Glad you gave me the URL. I had been looking to see how things were going and the brain wasn't workign well enough to find the post.
Hoping to read more of what you wrote later.
But, when I read the first post I wondered about surgury and lyme as I had read that the pain lyme patients have is equivelant (sp?) to a person just coming out of surgery.
So, how does this work when you have lyme in there bones and tissues too. Sheesh.
TAke care of you.

How's my Tutu feeling today?
I'm hoping you've had some more progress since yesterday.
