Greetings All !

It's little `ol annoying me --- AGAIN
Sorry.

Doxy: take with food or not?

What kinds of foods?
What do you eat with it?

Consistency by taking every 12 hours or Spike ?

I have searched here and read but still confused...

A little background if it helps:

NY - 1994 - Tick party on my body !
NEVER treated.

This is my first time taking any ABX in 5 years...

(Last time was in 2003 - some sort of ABX ? - IV - 1 dose - given in hospital after childbirth - something about a fever ?)

Got VERY ill afterwards: ITCHY PAINFUL RASH, no sleep, no eat, - was it a herx?
Who knows?

Ended up with a TERRIBLE double ``yeast'' infection in both ears.

I only have 45 - 100 mg capsules of Doxy - 3 weeks worth of 100mg 2Xday

Bottle says:
``...best taken on an empty stomach with full glass of water, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.''

So that's what I have been doing this past week.
Major Nausea and general ill feeling and it's been rough but haven't vomited... yet.

Then...

Many people here say: Take with Food !

What kind of food?

I am TRYING to avoid feeding the yeast so that rules out any foods that I would normally eat with my tummy feeling this way, ie: crackers, toast, ginger ale.

I read here:
No citrus = makes sun issues worse.
But I've been drinking lemon water because I read, here, that I should.
Ain't leaving the house at the moment anyway.

I never had "stereotypical" GI issues until this year:

Horrible Gastritis, Esophagitis, and Esophageal spasms, had me hospitalized last month.

I read that Doxy binds to: Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, & Vitamin C

Well, what foods don't have any of that in them?
Absolutely none that I can find.

I really need help here.
Specifically, food, recipes, suggestions, ideas.

Today, I tried to eat oatmeal, with some walnuts and blueberries about 2 hours after the doxy but could only manage a few mouthfuls.

Ginger tea has helped a lot and I need to get out to buy some more.

Don't know why (this is all new for me - last 2-3 months) but sometimes, like today and yesterday, I get a sensation that something is stuck in my throat... is it this Eagle's Syndrome discovered on a CT scan last month ? Esophageal Spasms?

I dunno !

But it is horrible.
Then, everything in my GI tract comes to a screeching halt.
Nothing is digested.
I can drink but I can't eat and I certainly can't take any pills.

I melt Ativan under my tongue, and crush up Percocet in apple juice - but they just don't work until this... this, "spasm" subsides.

For what it's worth: I HAVE had heartburn in the past but not in years and NEVER with this new crap.

I thought about avocados but then they have Vit C, Mag, & Iron so... ?

Whatever it is it has to be simple to prepare...
I can't cook for my poor children, let alone myself.

Even though, it may not be a high enough dose, I really NEED this to work.

At least, until I can get some REAL treatment at LLMD next month.

I have read here, that this is a Marathon not a Sprint but at the rate this is progressing, I feel like if I don't at least stop it then I will be blind - sitting in a wheelchair.

Thank You !

Ask your LLMD for Ondansetron.

It's an anti-nasuea pill. It's effective. People with cancer use it after they have chemotherapy.

It works in my house. Take it an hour or so before the Doxy.

Then when you take the Doxy eat some food.

I always take my doxy with food. It makes me really sick if I don't.

SickRI,

That's Zofran, right?

Think I had me some of that in the ER in March.

(Amazing - just amazing - the meds they are willing to "Try" on you that is of course unless you happen to have a TBD - can't even get an aspirin, then!)

I'll be sure to ask for some to try - Thank You!

I was just in R.I. for the first time ever, not even a month ago - GEORGEOUS !
Super friendly awesome folk - the locals.

Came home with renewed spirits, some really neat beach finds: ``Mermaid's Purses'' -
and FINALLY an answer for what ails me.

So in a sense, I came to Lymenet via Rhode Island!

Discdogger,

Do you feel that the Doxy is as effective when taken with food?

Yes, Zofran it is.

(What is a TBD?). Zofran really worked wonders in my family. You have to be careful with it, its very powerful.

At our house, it is usually only needed as one pill every other day. It lasts a long time I guess.

Once it's working, it can make it possible for ginger to work. And of course, ginger is MUCH cheaper.

Best part? We never saw any side effects from it.

Hi All

Eat a few soda crackers before taking Doxi-

Like the bottle label says take on empty stomach
but the label also usually says to take with
a few crackers if Doxi upsets stomach --Jay--

SickRI,

TBD = Tick Borne Disease
(I think anyway. Hey, I'm learning here so I could be totally wrong and in my case it just may mean Totally Brain Dead ) [Big Grin]

That was my very next question: side effects.
Good to hear none reported.
I don't recall any in the ER but they gave me so many meds how could I tell ?

So when you say: "our house", do you mean those who may be under 12 years of age?

I only ask because I have read enough and I don't need a crystal ball to see where my entire family is heading with this.

I will be the guinea pig as I was the source.

Groovy,

So you eat the crackers before not after -- hmm?
I'll give that a try.

I was just trying to avoid yeasty beasty feeding.

Thanks Again !

What LymeED Said....

and because of what YOU said, "Horrible Gastritis, Esophagitis, and Esophageal spasms, had me hospitalized last month."....

You'd best take it with FOOD!!! Eat vegetables with it if nothing else.

( Don't take with dairy. )

I seriously don't know HOW you could take it on an empty stomach. I was taking 200mg twice a day.

The last time I took it a couple hours after eating a meal (instead of with my meal), I was vomiting horribly.

Take it with a meal and just avoid dairy like lymetoo said (& of course antacids like maalox) and you will be good. You shouldn't even need the zofran.

Oh yes, take doxy with LOTS of food.

I always took doxy at the end of a good meal, breakfast and dinner.

Taking it on an almost empty stomach was awful, and it worked great without the distress after a meal.

Alrighty Then !

I was just worried about it working at maximum potential. [Cool]

Your insights have me willing to give it a try.

soonermom,
I am only taking 100mg 2Xday so that may make the difference. Plus I take it with tons of water before and after and ginger tea before and after.
The other night crystallized ginger too.
(I know - SUGAR !) [Eek!]

Though it's been a little rough, this is my first whack at these bast***s in 15 years - they've long over-stayed their welcome.

I'm sure that this is common here with us Newbies... starting out of the gate.

But that's why I am here...
to hopefully avoid as many fumbles as I can by heeding the wisdom of those who came before me.

THANK YOU - ALL !
[group hug]
