Hi Everyone,

First I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me find a LLMD.

I was diagnosed with Lyme, and also Babesia.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found Dr. S in Bloomsburg, PA. Dekrator48 is seeing the same doc,

and she has posted some great summaries about his work.

His knowledge but also passion is extremely evident to me.

On my second month, I started taking Mepron to combat Babesia.

I had a question about maximizing the absorption of Mepron with fats.

Dr. S. emphasized that plant-based fats are not effective in absorbing the Mepron.

He recommended I use animal fats such as butter or cheese.

I wanted to ask everyone here if you've heard any evidence to shed some light on this situation.

I could not find ANY research online that specifically talks about Mepron with animal fats.

The reason I ask is that I am not entirely comfortable consuming high amounts of animal fat.

I used to be a vegetarian/vegan, and passionate about, and more at ease, consuming a plant-based diet,

and I always especially avoided animal fats. Even though deep down I didn't want to, I changed

my diet around when I became unhealthy,

especially because everyone around me looked at my "unconventional" diet as the cause for why I

felt so bad. The real reason I felt the way I did, I know now was Lyme and friends.

Has anyone else heard or have research/evidence pointing to a reason why animal fats would

be more advantageous for absorbing Mepron?

I currently have been taking it with peanut butter, macadamia nuts, etc, but added some organic

cream cheese into the mix after Dr. S's told me about animal fat.

Thank you everyone,

Sean.

I can not find anything about animal vs. plant based fats, but the studies I looked at either did not specify the specific food, or typically used toast with butter or milk.

Something I thought was interesting also - the Mepron on the market in the US now is micronised suspension opposed to the tablet form that used to be used. Fat ingestion increased the uptake from tablet form over 3-fold, but it only increases the uptake of the micronised form about 1.4-fold. Then again, for the cost of Mepron a 40% increase is a significant amount, especially since it seems that there is a limit of how much can be absorbed in one dose.

While I have never taken mepron, I think nuts are splendid. You might also try coconut oil. And - to be on the safe side if animal fat is required - add just a little organic ghee.

Some Ayurveda medicinal herbs are suggested to be taken with a little ghee. This is the brand that I get from my natural foods grocery:

I find ghee does not gum up my ears like cream cheese would (and it's far easier to stop with just a tiny amount). You will find small amounts of ghee recommended even for some special diets for illness:

I have never heard this and if that's true, then I'm up you-know-what-creek without a paddle.... LOL, because I'm vegan so I don't consume animal fat of any type.

BUT -- I have been taking Mepron for about five months now and it's been the most helpful of medcations for me. So I'd say it's been helping me big time, even without consuming animal-based fats.
