I was just thinking about this. With Aids you get covered by insurance and treated as having a serious illness that is life threatening.
People can actually live a very long time with AIDS and you don't necessarily become permanently disabled from it.
I've never heard of people actually becoming brain damaged and the things like what I saw on "Under our Skin." Esp. like what happened to the young man named Jared and the girl at the end that Mandy was talking to.
Then when Dr. B talks about the possibility of it being sexually transmitted and that changing everything. Don't they already have proof of this?
I think this if not now certainly in the near future this will be scarier than AIDS. Dr. J said it was how he felt about HIV in the 80's.
I wonder what it will take for America to wake up and see the seriousness of this disease. Not to scare anyone but America definetly needs a reality check here.
What are others thoughts on this? Also, that it is growing at 4x the rate of AIDS. The fact that all you have to do to contract it is simply walk out your front door. Actually not even that it can come right into your home...Frightening.

I had two Lyme friendly doctors, not even LLMDs, tell me that the Lyme patients they see endure rougher treatment than AIDS patients with little to no support. That really put this into perspective for me. It's scary because most people aren't even aware of what or where it is, let alone how quickly and drastically it can change your life.

I don't know. Both diseases can kill you.
Both you can live with as long as you are getting proper treatment.
I know that a Lyme diagnosis carries it's own stigma,
However, I think AIDs conjures up feelings of fear
In many individuals who can't or don't want to understand it.
I've never heard of children with Lyme being kept from school,
Like children with AIDs being totally ostracized from a community.
I guess there are pro's and con's to both illnesses.
I for one, vote for increased education for Lyme.
Not for sympathy.
More for a glimmer or slice of support.

AIDS may actually be late stage syphilis with some coinfections.
Given that Lyme is basically a more virulent form of syphilis, yeah I think it's worse than AIDS.
And it's just a matter of time before there's a stigma attached to Lyme. Once people realize it can be transmitted through saliva etc., I think it may carry a stigma worse than AIDS.

Well at times I wished I had cancer insread of lyme. Atleast there is a difinit outcome.(cured or dead)
My Doctor told me ,they are at point with lyme, like they were with cancer 30 years ago.
I think if we keep on digging up evidence in a calm and scientic manner,we will see change. I only hope we can out live the steere camp.

Interesting replies. I was thinking that yes I would like Lyme to be taken seriously like AIDS but I certainly would not want the stigma that is attached to AIDS.
The Syphillis/AIDS connection would be something but one is viral and one bacterial so I'm not seeing the possible connection. I was actually thinking that Lyme being bacterial vs. viral may be the one advantage of it.
As far as the Steere camp those guys are getting old. I wonder if we will have to wait until they are dead for things to change. I hope they don't have good genes. I'd hate to see any of them on the smuckers 100 yr things..lol

Thanks for the link. Do you know if they have done any trials with AIDS patients receiving antibiotics?
I know what you mean about Cancer appleseed. You see these nice looking cinics on tv now. Cancer treatment centers. They work on all aspects of illness and get wrapped in a blanket of support and care. How nice that would be for us...Dare to dream.
One thing I remind myself of very often and when I get afraid of death (which I am) is that too just give life all that you can. Try and be the best person you can because we are all already dying, everyone of us, from the time we are born we are indeed dying and it is the one thing we can count on in this life and the only guarantee.
I'd like to think that in the next life we get a chance to do it even better. I'd like a bumper sticker that reads: Guess what your already dying. We really should live like we we're dying because we are.
Take Care, Ann

I actually believe that AIDS might just be Lyme and Syphilis, either mutated or working symbiotically. Or atleast a new spirochete all together.
The HIV, Lyme, Syp tests cross react and the symptoms are so similar. Lyme hit the news in 75-76'. People were dying of a mysterious unknown disease in 78-79'.
The scientests who discovered HIV and claimed it caused AIDS, recently admitted they lied and it doesn't cause AIDS. HIV has never been isolated in a person. Since the inception of AIDS there hasn't been one recorded fatality from Syphilis. Has Syp been diagnosised as AIDS all these years. If you look at the Symptoms of HIV and Syphilis, they always say something like "Extreme weight loss - HIV/Syphilis" They are always together.
Abx have helped people with HIV and antivirals were shown to stop syphilis from mulitiplying and putting into a cystic state. The CDC knows this, they don't want to come and say oh we made a mistake. They would have to admit that abx don't easily cure spirochetes. Then the public fear that AIDS is highly contagious would cause a major panic.

I noticed recently in an article which I can't find now that they said that Syphilis was on the rise in Gay men. I was just tested for Syphilis when I relapsed with Lyme by my PCP. When she said it, I went you don't think this could be the Lyme? That was when I put two and two together.
I was also thinking about the fact that they say Syphilis is rare. I was thinking how could that be. Didn't they also give short amounts of antibiotics for Syphilis as well?

PMID: 8817171 (do NOT squish the tick no matter how mad you are! You can pick up Bb and transmit it via direct contact from the tick's gut contents)
"While Lyme spirochetes have been found in insects other than ticks,[39] reports of actual infectious transmission appear to be rare.[40] Sexual transmission has been anecdotally reported; Lyme spirochetes have been found in semen[41] and breast milk,[42] however transmission of the spirochete by these routes is not known to occur.[43]
Congenital transmission of Lyme disease can occur from an infected mother to fetus through the placenta during pregnancy, however prompt antibiotic treatment appears to prevent fetal harm.[44]"
Follow the reference numbers to read the abstracts (41, 42, 43 = Steere), 44).
Worse that HIV? In some respects yes. But slower. Triage.

many great points above.
aids/hiv patients are treated with respect; their health insurance companies REIMBURSE their fair share, and we already know that lyme/co-infections DON'T PAY.
i posted a link in wee am hours of 300 other diseases; please look it over as AIDS is one of overlapping illnesses! it's an eye-opener.

Hi Lakes
When I said cancer I guess I was speaking in general terms . There are forms today that are curable even in the later stages.
I don't mean to scare people .but if this lyme goes for 4 or more months from what I have gathered it is almost not cureable. Of course We see people who are symptom free. But there always seems to be some rissidual problem like multitasking problems, memeory, joint, problems that somehow or another resurface.
For myself I look at lyme as a life long battle.like a nagging cold. I really hope there are people out there who are completly cured, with no damage left over.
I go by one day at a time. I really never excpect too be completly cured. And that is ok by me. As long as I can help others being with lyme or what ever they need help with ,I will have served My pourpose on this earth. I hope You are well and are doing as well as You can be today. appleseed

It is a shame but it is happening with Lyme kids too. My heart goes out to them.
It actually happened to me years ago.
I was in college and when some people at the table where I was sitting for lunch were told I had Lyme by someone who walked up to them and knew me.
Even though they were at the far end of a long table from me... they got up and moved to another table.
I learned later it was because they were afraid I would give Lyme to them by sitting at the same table.
