What is the normal dosage for Malarone? I am taking Omnicef and Levaquin and starting Malarone soon.

Thanks

I believe the normal dosage is one 250/100mg pill twice a day....at least that's what I was prescribed.

My LLMD said I would take 4 for 3 days at first and then less (although he didn't say how much less). Why do they do the 4 a day at first?

Usually, when you are told to take a higher dose of any med in the beginning, (it is called "loading" I believe) it is to get you to the effective level of the drug quicker.

Here's a quote from Wikipedia, under "Loading Dose":

In pharmacokinetics, a loading dose refers to an initial higher dose of a drug that may be given at the beginning of a course of treatment before dropping down to a lower maintenance dose.[1]

A loading dose is most useful for drugs that are eliminated from the body relatively slowly. Such drugs need only a low maintenance dose in order to keep the amount of the drug in the body at the appropriate level, but this also means that, without an initial higher dose, it would take a long time for the amount of the drug in the body to reach that level.
