Bugg,
I have been using Schiff 25 mg tabs and taking
1/2 tab daily. I get them at WMart. I have only
noted good effects. When you say "pure" are you speaking of contaminants of some kind?
Just wondering.

Good for you! I wish it worked for me. I tried lots of high quality whey (undenatured) protein and lots of D and no luck. I don't believe animal protein is good for the body anyway so I am taking a different approach now.

Hey Guys-

The study below supports what I was trying to articulate above about inflammation ravaging your muscles/bones.....The study below shows that chronic inflammatory diseases can cause bone resportion (loss of minerals from bone); perhaps whey protein/vitmain D help with this...

I've cut and pasted an excerpt below from Dr. Gupta of CNN where he discusses non-meat sources of protein (including protein shakes):

April 22, 2010

As a feature of CNNhealth.com, our team of expert doctors will answer readers' questions. Here's a question for Dr. Gupta.

FROM CNN.COM BLOGGER, DAWN:

"What is the most effective way to get extra protein without meat, chicken or fish in my diet?''

Answer:

Dawn, I can tell you, it is a myth that you need to get all your protein from a meat source. And that rule of thought is something that a lot of people have, so I appreciate you reaching out to me to ask this question. There are many alternatives and ways you can incorporate extra protein in your diet.

First let me explain why it's so important for your health. A diet rich in lean protein is going help build muscle and bone mass that adults start to lose as we age.

It is going to help prevent arthritis, and overall it is going to help you maintain healthy skin and organs.

Some of my favorite foods that are high in protein are nuts, soy products and even tofu. Yes, I know many people like to scrunch up their nose when they hear tofu but give it a try! Add it to some stir-fry; add a little sesame oil for some good flavoring.

Also, check out the nutrition labels on some of your favorite low-fat dairy products. A cup of cottage cheese has 28 grams of protein; yogurt has 11 grams.

Another question that comes up quite a bit is whether protein shakes are also a good choice. I think they are potentially a good option when it comes to trying to improve your protein stores. However, you want to make sure to examine the ingredient label carefully. Let me give you a couple of quick tidbits when it comes to protein shakes.

Look first at the type of protein in the shake. If the source of protein is an animal source (egg whites, whey, milk protein) or a soy protein, it can be considered "high quality" protein. And make sure the type of protein is the first ingredient listed and that it doesn't contain a laundry list of ingredients. The more ingredients, the less real protein it contains.

A little rule of thumb to remember is that protein typically has about 4 calories per gram so if you're seeing a lot more than that in a particular shake, you're probably getting a lot of added stuff.

How much per day? Women over age 18 should consume about 46 grams of protein a day; 56 grams per day for men.

This whey thread is very informative but please answer this:

How can I take whey with
NO MSG or anything that may called other things but is still msg??

I have done whey shakes before and they have helped me with wt. loss.

I especially like one of the sites someone above mentioned that you can design your own formulation.

But please tell me about the msg issue.

Thanks!

Protein shake recipe:

Make in the large cup of the Magic Bullet
Magic bullet makes a better shake than most blenders (yes, even the expensive ones). Of course a VitaMix is best but who can afford one of those?

8 oz. Pacific Almond Milk
1 scoop of Jarrow Unflavored Whey
1 tsp Now granular lecithin
2 to 4 Tbsp Now organic cocoa
Fresh spinach leaves (about an once - not really sure)
6 Frozen teeccino ice cubes (see below)
Stevia to taste (I use NuNaturals NoCarb Stevia from Iherb - little less than 1/4 tsp)

I mix everything together except the ice cubes. When the other stuff is mixed I put in the cubes and mix until it is smooth.

(Why spinach? 1. It's really good for you! 2.It makes the shake smoother and less icy and you can't taste it at all.)

How to make teeccino ice: Get Teeccino: http://www.teeccino.com/ ( you can alos get it at vitacost.com, vitaglo.com and iherb.com )

I brew mine double strength and them cool on the counter. Then freeze in ice cube tray. Important to let cool before freezing to avoid it becoming bitter.

VARIATIONS:
Can be made with regular ice if you do not like Teeccino.

Can be made with Real Coffee Ice Cubes if you are bad and drink coffee

Can be made with Plain ice and berries instead of chocolate and teeccino

My favorite variation is Frozen strawberries and lemon juice.

Also you can replace some of the almond milk with tofu and/or yogurt for a creamier texture.

Actually variations are endless.

Basically, in every shake I use:
8 oz of some liquid or mixture of liquid/yogurt/tofu
Spinach
Scoop of protein
Some for of Ice
Some stevia
Some lecithin

Flavors can be mixed up. Frontier sells a line of Alchol free flavorings that I have used from time to time. You can Google "Frontier alcohol free flavor" and find info.

Hope this helps somebody. Possibilities are endless. Don't be afraid of adding the spinach it really helps the texture of the shake.

Jarrow's is good but I recently switched to Hemp protein and really like it. I use it after hard workouts too.

About UNDENATURED WHEY.

Why not to put undenatured whey in a blender - and also why to not combine it with certain foods, juice, coffee or tea:
---------------

https://www.prohealth.com/shop/product.cfm/product__code/N056

ImmunePro RX (Whey)

ImmunePro RX contains Lactoferrin, Immunoglobulins (IgGs), Bovine Serum Albumin, Active Peptides and Growth Factors to promote optimal immune function and detoxification.
. . .

* What is the best way to store ImmunePro RX?

60 degrees Fahrenheit (or cooler) in a dry location; refrigeration is acceptable.

* What is the best solution to mix it in?

Purified water is the best liquid to thoroughly mix ImmuneProRx. Use a sealable container to shake it, or a MANUAL eggbeater.

* Do not use an electric blender. The whey proteins are easily denatured through heat and pH change.

Mixing the whey protein with any other types of food can induce a pH change and slow the transit time in the stomach through its digestive response to the solid food.

Liquids that are not neutral in their pH can also denature the proteins, for example: most fruit juices, coffee, and tea. By following the above guide, the uptake of the undenatured protein fractions in the upper small intestine is optimized.

A small amount of Stevia is an acceptable sweetener, if desired, for palatability.

. . . .

I drink one of these every afternoon and it's so delicious:

1 scoop Natural flavor (unflavored) Designer Whey
5-6 large strawberries
1/2 banana
1/4 cup water

Blend on high in blender. Pour in glass with several ice cubes.

No sweetener needed.

There's some controversy about soy as a "healthy" food. I stopped eating it & went back to chicken, fish, beef. I think there are nutrients we need in meat. I'm not saying go eat junk food. I just think small amounts of meat or fish are good. I was a vegetarian for many years - so, I can understand why people may want to avoid meat.

Everyone is different - so, this is just my opinion.

Keebler is correct about the whey. There are special brands of whey that you cannot mix into a blender drink.

Also- you may want to make sure that any spinach or soy is organic & not GMO (especially lecithin). Spinach is one of the most heavily sprayed (pesticides) vegetables - so, it best to get it organic & non-GMO for any soy products.

There are studies that GMOs can cause many diseases. They have not been carefully studied for any potential dangers to our health or the environment. The gov't is not looking out for us in this matter.
