I've had a metallic taste in my mouth for a couple of weeks, now. Anyone else get this or have ideas to look in to?

Hi, greengirl! Magnesium and/or malic acid cause this sometimes.
Other trace metals (useful mineral supplements we take) could cause this, too. Possibly Calcium?
If you're taking more magnesium than your bod needs, you'll get diarrhea.
To keep taking the same supplements without metallic aftertaste, be sure to take mineral supplements and malic acid in the middle of a large meal.
For example, I'm on abx, and take my abx with B & D. No mineral supplements with doxy. So, at lunchtime i take most of my mineral supplements in the middle of my substantial GF lunch.

Was on Flagyl at one point, and llmd told me I would have that taste.... and he said to eat potatoe chips. It worked.
This is a common taste reaction to the drugs in our system.
Find what works for you to 'mask' the taste.

I have it on Biaxin. It's so bad it wakes me up at night. As a result, I keep sugar free mints on the night stand.

Thanks guys. I'm not on magnesium, yet and don't have fillings. So, I was wondering about release of metals. I did't know abx could do this, too. I am taking Chlorella, already. Guess I'll check out the chips. See doc tomorrow, so I'll speak to him about that script. "_

Many antibiotics are capable of altering taste. A metallic taste is very common with Flagyl, for instance (Tindamax has a lesser occurrence of this symptom compared to Flagyl, but it does happen). Many patients also report certain foods "not tasting right", as well.
Just inform your physician, but I'm sure you can find a type of food or drink that will help dull the metallic taste. Many find green tea to be helpful, as well as mint tea.

It's definitely Biaxin for me. I eat Dentyne cinnamon sugar free Fire gum whenever I get that taste. If it's nightime I have a bowl of popcorn with lots of sea salt. My pharmacist says to eat a piece of chocolate - but that's not good for you if you have lyme.

Once in a while I get a bad taste from Biaxin, and my doc says to drink more water, which seems to help me.
When I first started doxy, after a month I lost the ability to taste sweet things for several weeks, so anything sweet tasted like bland mush. It came back, though, and has not bothered me again in the last several months.
I had a bit of a bad taste on the worst days when I had thrush last week. If it's related to yeast, you can tell because your tongue will be white.

It's not abx per se, it is anything that can kill pathogens. My LLMD told me this in the 2nd visit. I don't fully understand why but apparently scientists are looking at using certain types of bacteria to help absorb and remove heavy metals from the environment.

I think just about everyone has exposure to heavy metals whether they have amalgams or not. I don't know about mercury but aout 50% of the mothers lead burden is transferred to the fetus. This information used to be on the EPA website.

Before I went on any abx, I had a severe metallic taste in my mouth that lasted about 2 weeks and then subsided. At this time, I also started to get incredible fatigue. I happened to have my blood work taken at this time by my LLMD and when I finally saw her a month later, it was learned that my iron levels were extremely high. Which they were never before.
When trying to figure out this problem, my LLMD explained that if I have a parasite or something that rapidly destroys red blood cells it will release the iron from the cells into the blood and cause the metallic taste. Since a parasite like Babesia acts like malaria and it will come and go in a cyclical manner which may be why it slowly subsided.
To combat this problem, she put me on malarone and I have had a slight metallic taste but not a severe one since. There is no telling if it is exactly right but it makes more sense than anything else. You may have to really look at certain symptoms like increasing fatigue with the metallic taste or otherwise it could be something else.

Too much iron can be a big problem. Good to bring that up, vanbench19.
I think most Lyme patients should not take any supplemental iron. Multi-vit should be without iron. I've read nutritional advice that we should even avoid spinach and lentils for same reason.

I'm on Biaxin too and have that awful metallic taste. I drink lots of water throughout the day but can't get rid of it. It's always worse 1/2-1 hr after I take my dose. I'm def. going to try the suggestions here!
What's the best multivitamin to take that doesn't have iron?

Talked to LLMD. At this point it seems that the most likely culprit is Babesia. My test for that was negative, but that doesn't sway doc when symptoms are present. We're looking to start treating that soon, after trying a couple other things.
The iron thing is a trouble. I take iron for sleep issues and had very very low levels last time I tested for that. So, I'll need to test that again.
I also started taking mag,zinc and copper so, hopefully, any metals that are stirred up no longer have a place to bind.
I went to a lead safe work practices training for work last week (I don't do lead work, but monitor recordkeeping/etc.). They recommended that lead mitigation contractors supplement those, too, for the same reason. It was nice to see that.

does anyone know why iron is not good for Lyme. I read some sites that say that the bacteria really doesn't use iron to survive. I am doing some more research into this whole iron thing because I am finding that certain things make my symptoms worse, such as, sun chlorella, milk thistle, vitamin c and Miracle mineral solution. The only thing I can find in comon with them is iron. They all seem to have something to do with iron and i am wondering if it is not the babesia but an actual iron disorder that is holding my progress back. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. Thanks
