My tongue is turning white while taking antibiotics!! I am currently taking lots of kefir 2x/day, and 4 pills acidophilus/day and some, not much, homemade yogurt. Apparently it's not enough for me.

Someone mentioned Theralac. Any others?

I'm taking on Theralac pill probiotic, then another acidophyllus at night. I found out I should be doing more, though. I heard the Theralac was a really good one.

I take theralac (LLMD recommended) and a mix of several other brands. Talk to your LLMD about nystatin. I've been on it for awhile and it is very helpful. Also, I stay on several other supplements to keep yeast at bay.

Diet is important in controlling yeast too. Lots of posts in the archives about yeast control. Yeast can be as bad as lyme symptoms so best to control it as soon as possible.

These posts should help with the probiotic issue.

Essential Formulas (sorry, $).

Loading doses...5 capsules at least 2x/day one hour before a meal with a full glass of water.

For a week and then "maintenance".

Good luck!

I have the white tongue too. Can't stand it. Does saccrymycees boulardii help with yeast too? I'm confused. Missing my Gatorade [Frown] .

My Dr told me a lot of the probiotics on the market didn't work. Unfortunately it's the expensive ones that do. He said you had to have one that the probiotic attached to the intestinal wall and a lot of them don't. He mentioned healthy trinity, floraster, theralac, anything with saccharomyces boulardi in it. I can't remember the rest I've always taken primal defense and have never had problems but he didn't know about this one. He recommends taking 3 different ones. When I win the lottery I plan on doing that.

I have taken 1/2 - 1 cup of yogurt daily for past 13 months. Current med list: amox 5 gm/day
flagyl 750/day, clarith 500 2x/day, bactrim ds 1 tab 2x/day and artemisinin 200 2x/day--3 days/wk.
Have had no problems with using yogurt as probiotic. Anyone else using yogurt as primary
probiotic?

My Naturopathic Doctor told me that yogurt does not contain enough probiotics to be useful as a probiotic. I don't know if that is true or not. I use yogurt but only in conjunction with other probiotics.

Kefir is a very good drink that helps repopulate the gut.

VSL #3

used to be on theralac, was also effective

follow Dr. B's guidelines on how to remove oral thrush

i use regular listerine, hold it in the mouth while brushing the tongue. gotta get it out of the mouth before you can get it out of the body, at least according to Dr. B

I used to use Theralac and found that it did not do enough. I added Sacchromyces B., and changed to Suprema Dophilus by Village Green apothecary as I felt the theralac was not doing anything better than the cheaper brand. I think I was right.

The Sacchromyces is essential, in my opinion. I take 1 of each 2 times per day. Sometimes I take more suprema dophilus. Sometimes I open a cap into my mouth.

Sometimes I use Nystatin if my tongue starts getting coated. But, that is not very often.

Do you mean Brand or "type" of probiotic (Capsule, serving dishful, powder)

I'm assuming you don't mean the probiotic species. :-/
(i.e: L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, etc.)

You should always consume a mix of all available probiotics;
fresh unsweetened yoghurts, Kefir, capsules from the NatFood store.

For yoghurt, I'm partial to Columbo & Stonyfield quarts. But that's NH availability.
Kefir seems to only be available around here as a tall, blue&white plastic quart bottle.
And I always recommend a fresh batch of "pbx" capsules that come in the dark-brown glass jars.

My LLMD really finds Theralac capsules effective for his patients, but a jar of 30 was $40 or so, back when I bought it in 2006-07. (Except 1/2-price for the 1st jar, via a coupon;) That's $$$ pbx!

[Say, Keebler- Did I just coin the abbreviation 'pbx'?]

I read on the Florastar instructions - do not take if you have a central venous cathetar. I have also read in reasearch article that people with a port can get infections from probitotics.

Has anyone's LLMD mentioned this? Does anyone know about this?

I have a port and I am concerned about it.

Thanks
