I just asked this same question in a thread that got buried.

Do you use it? I have been using it almost every day, tablespoons worth. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or a bad thing.

I know that whole flax seeds are less potent but still have similar benefits...but I'm not sure how to use them. I know you have to grind them, and I think you can heat them, whereas flax seed oil should never be heated...but I'm not sure.

I hope you get some answers soon!

Please, if anyone knows why Dr. B says no to Flax Oil I'd really appreciate it.

I've been looking into GAPS diet and it is recommended for that. I purchased it to go along w/doing GAPS and then found the info about Dr. B advising against it but can't find any info as to why he advises against it.

I checked the 2008 guidelines and it says nothing specifically about avoiding Flax Oil but many on here say he says to avoid it.

Does anyone know where he says that and why? Thanks to anyone who knows.

If you click on the first link and scroll down it does say avoid flax seed oil. I have no idea why, and have been taking that with my mepron every day.

Anyone know why? Anyone have good results from taking Flax Oil?

I have a whole unopened bottle sitting here and am waiting to take it. I'll call my LLMD I guess but it is hard to get a call back it seems.

I am curious as well. In googling I did come across a few articles stating flax oil is contraindicated for diabetes and schizophrenia, and also found this:

" Should I take flax seed oil supplements?

What about supplementing with flax seed oil? I used to be a big believer in flax oil supplements, however, it is now becoming clear from the literature that fish oil is the preferred form of omega-3 oil supplement. For one thing, only a small percentage of the ALA in flax oil is converted by the body into EPA and DHA, the most active forms of omega-3 in the body. Secondly, in recent research, there appears to be an association between elevated levels of ALA in the body and increased risk of prostate cancer.(11) Therefore, we do not recommend supplements of flax seed oil. Likewise, mixed oil supplements that include a combination of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 oils should probably be avoided, as we already take in too much omega-6 fats and this would just continue the imbalance. Eat wild salmon or other fish at least two times per week and supplement daily with a high quality fish oil (EPA/DHA) supplying at least 500mg per day of both EPA and DHA. As always, check with your doctor to make sure that these recommendations are appropriate for you."

Not specific for lyme, though. I myself had a horrible reaction to "fish oil". I have no idea why and have yet to find a reason, but my pain increased greatly while taking it.

I don't know Dr. B.'s reasons. But, I have found Futurebiotics brand EPA and NuTru brand DHA to be superior for me. The reasons Ellen gave above are likely the reason, particularly the conversion rates.

Ellen, finally an answer that makes sense! Thanks for that! I guess my new bottle will remain unopened.

I have been grinding my own flax seed for years and have 1 or 2 tbsp. every day. I think it helped to get me through menopause with hardly any hot flashes or major mood swings. It is anti-inflammatory and has numerous health benefits.

But I just read this when trying to locate information about it being contra-indicated with lyme...

"The fiber in flaxseed may lower the body's ability to absorb medications that are taken by mouth. Flaxseed should not be taken at the same time as any conventional oral medications or other dietary supplements."

Wow - this is distressing to learn, as I have been taking it every morning with my breakfast when I take Mepron. Looks like I am going to need to change my breakfast routine.

I don't think the same would apply to the oil, though. The oil is not as beneficial as eating ground flax seed according to many articles I have read.
