According to lyme specialists, if you have symptoms of lyme and get a positive test, it is not a false positive.
On the other hand, many, many, many people with lyme disease get a negative lyme test. This is what you would call a false negative test.
False negatives are the big problem with lyme disease. People who have the disease are told they don't have it and go on to suffer needlessly many more years all because the tests are not that good at identifying everyone that has lyme disease.
Here is a program done by a Boston TV station on lyme disease in which you will hear many people say that they had negative lyme tests and still had lyme disease:
The show was taped by a girl on LymeNet and she put it on-line for all of us to be able to view it. You will learn a lot about the medical controversy surrounding lyme disease and why it is so hard to find a doctor who knows how to cure a person of lyme disease.
You will also hear over and over how people tested negative for lyme disease, only to find out later that they actually had the disease.

I would say no. You might get a positive and not have symptoms. In that case, you don't need treatment as treatment only lasts for a couple months past your last symptom ... ie the goal is symptom free.
Also, if there is a question because band 30 or 31 was positive, you can have a confirmation test done to determine those bands were due to Lyme.
If you have symptoms and tested positive, you have Lyme.
