Good for you,Maddog!
This sounds so wonderful. That is a beautiful area you have chosen and Just Don must be howling at the moon just to know you have decided on his back yard.
I wish I could be there, but have guests coming during that time.
Here is a good Yip-pee for you (spelling especially adapted to dog humor)

Cool Maddog, I thought for an instant you were having it and NOT inviting me cause I cant kayak very well :~).
Another thing no one SHOULD miss is the "Ashfall fossil beds" at Royal, just a hundred miles give or take east of Valentine. My thought is everybody from the east will be passing right thru that area and would be nice to 'group it' sometime during the beginning time.
This is one of the MOST fascinating sites you will EVER see. Camels, rhinos, and three toed horses all laying one on top of another. They think a volcano erupted somewhere west and 'covered' them with volcano ash in a very short time frame.
Also an old town"western" called Winnatoon that is like walking back in Marshall Dillon days.
I am only following Maddogs lead but offering ideas to not miss this once in a lifetime experience.
I love the time frame Maddog, it gives me a breather cause June is SUCH a zoo around here.
Another natural sight(some and MOST would NOT agree) to behold is the center pivots will be running almost non stop by then and to drive thru the country and see the crops flourish with this life giving water phenom, field after field.
There is also some other things to see in the state but other areas and quite far from Valentine. Like Chimney rock in the west, carhenge in the west, and Pioneer Village in the south part of the state.
Indeed the Niobrara river is one of the ten most beautiful rivers and just recently(within last 20 years) was designated a National Scenic river and protected as such.
What I started out to say is ,,, I saw an ad for help wanted(just last night) for one of the outfitters on this river. good drivers record a must. Free lodging and $350 a week. such a deal,,, should take it myself. Wouldnt that be a hoot, gettting to meet people from all over the world that travels here. And drive boats and people upstream.
Now yall come, hear now??? I know its a fer piece to travel, but the company,,,like maddog and others (NOT me)... is "PRICELESS". One in a life time experience. Forget the NAME of the state, this area is gorgeous, nothing quite like it!!!
Maddog has picked a winner "here". Come see why!!!

Char, Pontoons would be too heavy and cumbersome for this river. especially at 'low tide'. (smiles)
Alot of people 'do' use innertubes on this stream. They wear shoes too(rocks are HARD)and just walk when sandbarred, or move to the other side of the rebber (lol)
Dont know IF you can get your waist wet, unless running flood stage, or you are sitting down on the rocks. Flood stage in JULY would be something to behold!!!
I have floated this area twice, both on singles trips. Myself I prefer canoes, or maybe a kayak cause they are lighter. IF I was looking for a sunburn the tubes are okay. But maybe because I am --just don--

For a piece of candy I will.
For those who don't think they can "do it"...
Quick note about one friend who was going to make the trip and then just sit in the room while we went out in the canoes and kayaks... cause they couldn't get their IV site wet.
And this person has not always had good luck in the great outdoors.. mind you. Aside from Lyme and other tick borne diseases.. I once heard a squirrel fell on their head... and they once took a canopy tour over the rain forest in Costa Rica and had a few BAD (CRASH) landings on the platforms suspended between the trees and ame back down dancing.
But they managed to DO the canoe trips .. ALL of the trips each day we went.. and stayed dry and happy the entire time.
The canoeing can be gentle and not real physical.. so if all you can do is sit... there is still hope.
And I am sure you can "camp" along the banks and RELAX and enjoy the day .. if that is what floats your boat.
Ann-OH..
How be you? Missed seeing you!!!
Might you email me next week? (Haven't cleared out my overflowing email box yet) I have a friend who asked for your help with a new Lyme patient... and would like to have them email you if possible? I need your email address.. I THINK?? THANKS!

Hidden Paradise is as beautiful as the pictures say it is. I fell in love with my date to the 'dance hall' they describe in there, in the 60's dancing to a favorite tune(I will never forget THAT song).
The ranchers daughter of all people. That was short lived as that little bridge over the babbling creek you see in the pic,(the little brige with kids in tubes around it) Thats where my world began and ended, right there!!! Whoa, what a memmory!!
And the rancher still lives in the area, I talked to him just a couple years ago on the phone. Sure wish I could talk, just one more time, to the daughter, I have something pretty important to say!!
Bring your honey, and fall in love in the most gorgeous setting you will EVER find. What fond memories of a younger year!!!

Omaha is probably the closest real airport. Sioux City(boy I cant spell that one)Iowa would be a bit closer but airlines are quite limited.
Melanie, what airport would YOU be flying out of?? I would do a priceline check to SEE if there is any advantage to either one or an alternative port on YOUR end.
I tried it for Miami once, just for giggles, a while back and it said you could save a bunch by going to Ft. Meyers or one other place, cant remember, but Sioux City was much higher again. So Omaha is better choice, price wise. And BETTER connections IF you are meeting friends there.
I think the person that FLEW into Arkansaw had quite a ride to get there too ,,, from airport.
Secret is they keep the 'GOOD' spots(scenic) away from the BIG cities.
Do they still have unlimited miles on rental cars on regular rentals these days??? I havent rented a car in a cazzilion years.
Other secret to drive the miles is to be SOOOOO engrossed in the scenery as not to care how many miles it is till we get there. And to take the 'scenic' route, not the crow flies route.
Now if all else fails, I can arrange for a welcome back party from the fam. And they can drive up here REAL quick, and be tickled to do so!!! Specially IF they get to MEET YOU again!!!
Just saw on a map that North Platte is straight south of where you want to go. Dont know IF North Platte to Denver hopper flight is still going. They USED to do that. Then its only a 125 mile quick shot across the sandhills(they dont have radar out there)(well you wouldnt think so to see those locals drive there)2 hours or LESS. They REALLY hammer down, out there.
I "think" that Hidden Paradise cabins(the ones Maddog linked to) at Long Pine is a perfect setting for you and your roomy or 'ies. Make sure you bring at least two of them!!!
It really isnt all that far, seriously!! You will have so much to catch up on talking you will be there before you know it!!! --jd--

I just got off priceline for airline tickets. Interesting info I get there.
From Denver to North Platte flys Great Plains airlines (aka Tree top airlines) ( They stop once for gas and twice for directions) (Dont ya just love a funny guy??,, well, not, I guess!!)
But San Fran to North Platte tickets are a whooping $542. An alternate airport,,, Oakland Ca. to Omaha is about $340-50. helps a bit to stay off weekends.
Now I tried Miami to Omaha and got $341,,, but IF you fly out of Fort Lauderdale it is only $288. Thats what I meant by alternate airports.
I have never had ANY experience with "name your own price"
I dont know where you are at but makes MORE sense to meet a group in Omaha and carpool for 4-5 hours than go it alone for 2 and pay twice the fare. Or it does to this dim bulb!!
Maybe you could "rent a heap" (nice older cars) and save some cash. Or could just "borrow" a heap (mine) ( and NOT so nice) for free!!! (I promise to wash it first) ,,, maybe even clean out the inside first time in a decade!!
Its name is the 'mud buggy' for a reason, ya know!! AND is 4 WD for the tough going!!! of whch you wont see on THIS trip!!!
See how EASY this is!!! Your wishes are my desire!!Cuz I B --just don--

Hey dearhearts,
Yes, we spent about three hours checking everything out the other morning...once we figured WHERE the city actually was located.
Omaha is the best deal all around...best airfare and rentals, and shorter driving distance than Denver. (even though there will be layovers in Denver anyway)
It is a much better price coming from the east than the west for some reason, so I dont want to hear any whining about that- hint, hint
I just hate to spend half my vacation days on travel, but I do know that the time spent with friends carpooling DOES count as FUN time, and as you know, I am always up for a good road trip.
Soooo, if we can get a couple more firm committments from the other gals- it will be a GO!
For you others looking for the best airfares, I use SideStep, and it works quite well for quick comparisons.

Don, I ran prices from Fort Lauderdale and West Palm and FLL is the cheaper of the 2, can't remember the fare just now. I live between the 2.
I have a couple of things up in the air here until next monday but will be able to make a firmer commitment at that point.
I want so very much to do this. Please know that I'm working on it but it will take me about a week to get myself sorted out.
So count me as a definate maybe or maybe a bit moreso.

Hi Folks,
Here's one thing I bet it has been 'awhile' since you have attended. Check this out--
I was checking if Ainsworth Drive-in was still around. I have a GOOD story to tell on THAT theatre. Come to the float and I WILL tell you!!
Now the reason I posted this IS that one at "Neligh" is about 30 miles from where I live!! Can you believe I havent been there. Just 'assumed' it isnt proper to go 'alone'.
A main squeeze would be in order!! OR a 'no' squeeze 'good friend' works for me too.
Do "TELL" about your last drive-in experience!!!
The other main attraction to that town is a working order flour mill powered by water power from the 'creek'. I did tour this once ( by myself) It was awesome!!(if you LIKE that type of thing)
MOST amazing thing is this mill was built BEFORE there were any settlers or wood(trees) there and the lumber had to be oxen carted from 100 miles away.

No actually my house has two floors of which I cant sleep on both of them at the same time. YOU pick which level 'you' wish to sleep on. (PS I have the boom boxes going past all night too, I just close the door and let them pass. They are about 200 yards away tho and it makes a difference which way the wind is blowing.)
Can we pass national legislation to regulate the noise?? Here I think they do have laws that says you have to keep the tunes INSIDE the vehicle, but dont see many get ticketed for it. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, dont ya just love it???cuz I still B --just don--

Hi Don,Yep while traveling the Nebraska roads in the past I was very tired and looking for a campground.
I would look at the farm houses along the road and think wow if I could only park out there under the cottonwood trees there for the night in the barn yard and sleep.
All the farms surrounded by cottonwood trees look so peaceful. There in the middle of acres of corn and wheat fields.

This is right in my backyard, Sorry I haven't
been back to see you all on here in awhile..I
live on the Keya Paha river near Mills, NE and
we have land on the Niobrara..I would highly
reccomend Hidden Paradise, this will be about a
45 minute to a hour drive from the
canoeing/tubing area of the upper Niobrara and
it is beautiful there..For the camping Keller
Park is a gorgeous place to camp and not to
awfully far from Hidden Paradise..There is a
little motel in Springview, NE that is pretty
nice, called the Turtle Butte Lodge about 15
mintutes from Keller Park..If you need there
number just pm me..Me and my family also have
lodges that would be available to you all,
although I will not be able to make it...I am in
Lake Tahoe, CA now recieving a Beta-Interferon
in a drug trial and have to be here to take it 2
times a week.. "I'm jealous I can't make it" But
at least I get to come home In August..We could
give you a super cheap deal on the Lodges if you
are interested since we are all Lymies and to
basically cover the cleaning and utilities:) We
are about 30 minutes farther from the canoeing
area than Hidden Paradise and Keller park.. It
would be a little over a hours drive from the
canoeing area..Wish I could make it, it will be
gorgeous..The river may be abit down as we have
been dry back home, but it still should be good
to tube and easy to canoe..The Rosebud Casino is
a little over a hour drive as well, the food is
great there and they have good
accomadations..Also there is camping area around
the Lodges of ours for the campers..Just not as
scenic Like Keller park..Hope you all have a
great time..I think Don has the website to the
Lodges, Maddog if you are of interest pm me or
he maybe already sent you the link.. Be Well, Clay

Charlie, Looks like the REAL deal Charlie!! I thought you might bring your mo-bile house on wheels.
Maddog, So you are camping at Keller?? Do you have to reserve the space???
I bought an "Osage" alum. canoe this week. It 'used' to float down the Niobrara for an outfitter till it sprung a leak or needed repair, then sold to a guy 75 miles away. He fixes them and resells them for about market price. Says he gets in 20 at a time. (I figure this thing knows the way, and can endure more than I can give it) New canoes are WAY to high for my use.
When a local guy went to get this one for me he got one for him TOO. SO,,, if he is NOT using his that week,,, maybe I can borrow his for someone else I know that might be floating this week. What ya say gals,,, interested in a "free" canoe rental??????? That is IF its available.
Maybe I missed my calling,,, can I start a new enterprise,,, and buy and sell canoes for a living??? I would probably be up the river and a canoe short, hence without a 'paddle' again!!!
Another question for the experts among us. This is a two seater canoe. Can ONE person guide it okay or do I have to find a canoe mate??? To help steer??? It would be soooo much more fun to share with somebody else,,, but alas no takers from my vantage point!!!
Whatca think Maddog, Charlie, and others???
