Thought you all could use a laugh, so here's what I did on Sunday....

After raking leaves into 2 monster piles and applying gas (watch out for explosion) I set them on fire and thought everything would be ok.

Went to grab a couple of beers and proceeded to knock one back.

Noticed the fire was going beyond my piles but mistakenly thought everything was fine and it'd stop at the gravel and grass.

While still sucking down beer noticed the fire was really moving and there were these weird fire tornadoes forming. [Eek!]

I thought, 'what the heck'! [bonk]

By then, it started to dawn on me that something was amiss. [loco]

I fought valiantly against the fire but it quickly moved from my lawn to the surrounding trees in my backyard and my neighbor's property adjacent to mine.

Finally, I decided to call 911. [woohoo]

Once the volunteer fire department arrived, (2 trucks and at least 10 folks) the fire was extinquished and all was saved except my face and reputation. [toilet]

There were no animal or large tree injuries. [Wink]

Needless to say, the fire department tried to fine me but weren't able too because it was a legit burn day (high enough humidity).

Well, so much for making friends...........

boy you lucked out w/fire dept. getting things under control.

dad used to burn the ditches by our farm. 1 day it was windy and fires got away from him going into the farm field by there leading up to OUR BIG FARM HOUSE!

4 different city fire depts. came to get it stopped before it destroyed our home.

i was in city where i am living now ... enjoying a movie. when i drove home to farm, i could see all the MUD tracks on blacktop for 1 mile leading up to our house.

then i saw the damage the fires had done to field, and then learned what i had missed that afternoon! dad lucked out too, and our home!!

fires you need to watch 24/7.

Akl, where you trying to do a major tick kill in the yard or what?

I'm glad your friends rescued you? lol

New law goes into effect....No beer drinking allowed on legal burning days.

BettyG-Here's the sad thing-I was watching the fire.

Outside of running into the house for those brewskies I stood there the whole time.

The wind got out of control, along with my capacity for rational thought apparently. [lol]

Map-Um, yeah, exactly!!! I was experimenting with a controlled tick burn that got out of hand due to extenuating circumstances, i.e. unexpected wind and accidental consumption of alcohol. [lol]

Restrictions on burning - thanks to the same environmental

movement that re-populated the deer herd in the early 1900's,

against the advice of warnings that these actions would cause an

increase of environmental diseases - are thought to play a major

role in tick increases.

Old-timers swear that every year when they used to burn off all

the fields, the ticks were killed off. The same fields where the

over-populated deer now come to feast.

They spend a lot of time on the field edges feeding while ticks

are reproducing on and falling off of them. It's no surprise we

are warned against tick presence at the edges of fields.

Some communities will still let you burn off your fields. I

strongly urge all in this situation to investigate the possibility.

And remember: The only sure, proven way to lower the

incidence of lyme disease in an area is by eradicating the deer

herd.

You are too funny! [lol]

Once when I was a teenager, got a bright idea to

Pour gasoline on ant piles (red ants) to get rid of them.

Didn't think about the fact it had just rained.

Poured the gas, lit the fire.

Boy was I suprised when the whole yard lit up.

The gas was funneled on top of the rain water every where.

Good news it burned up before anything else did.

Thanks for the laugh.

I really needed one.

Glad you made out okay.

Were there any cute firefighters?

Hugs,

Geneal

Hey, at least you didn't try to douse the fire with your beer.

(alcohol is flammable, right? I just completely lost my chemistry class knowlegde)

Glad everything's okay.

You guys are funny!!!

Geneal-I see you survived your close encounter with an accelerant!

And unfortunately, I didn't notice any 'hotties', oh, I take that back, there was one.

But to be honest with you I was too embarrassed and busy trying to hide the beer bottles to notice much! [lol]

Wiserforit-That phone number for the FFCBB is posted on my fridge and here it is: 1-800-2HOT4US!!! [lol]

Starfall-What....and waste perfectly good beer?!?! [lick]

I promise you I was thinking about pouring the beer on the fire!

How do you all read my mind????!!!!

I am pretty sure it works to put it out due to the water content.

I've used it before on a flaming grill and it did kill the fire.

Man.....I haven't had a beer in about 10 years.

Now, I am actually craving one.

Along with one of those Fire-Fighting-Cabana-Boys [Big Grin] (Ms. Wiserforit2 you made me laugh!)

Just tell me....does anyone else in this thread have "blonde" hair like me? [Smile]

Don't worry about the fire.

I am sure TC can beat that story....hands down.

Hugs,

Geneal

gasoline to start a fire?? I just heard about another disaster with using gasoline for a fire, but with my lymebrain, I can't remember the details.

Hubby uses old motor oil, less volatile.

(actually, as he is a retired firefighter, I already have the "firefighter cabana boy" right here every day.

Hmmm, I think I'll go wake him up and let him know about that. =O

Just glad you are safe!

Hey aklnwlf, remind me to tell you about the time my boyfriend and I tried to burn down the Tuskegee National Forest...

We were burning the brush off his property.

We didn't get fined either, had a burn permit, but the wind picked up and carried it across our fire lanes.

We had to rescue a french-fried beagle from an abandoned house that accidentally caught on fire. She was sizzled, but our relationship fizzled. When she recovered I gave her to my future husband. This is a true story.

Former bf brought me a deer he'd hit with his pick-up. I was at my fiance's house. I hadn't had time to tell former bf I was now engaged. He had the deer-in-the-headlights look when I broke the news. We dressed the deer when it expired.
