I bought his book some time ago, beautiful story and this man in his kindness probably did more than anyone else to bond the friendship of the German people and heal the wounds of war! We had a surplus of good leaders back then. Today, not so much....
In the vane of war time chivalry another good book is "A higher call". A German ME-109 ace pulls up behind a very badly damaged B-17 on it's first mission. Observing most of the crew killed, flew formation with the B-17 to keep anti-aircraft gunners from firing till over open water, where the German ace saluted and returned to his base.
Their story got out a couple of years ago, they both survived the war and got together some time before they died about a year ago. Reading about great men sure tends to make me feel small and insignificant!

Thanks for the tip on the book, LabRat! I want to read "Unbroken" .. the movie is coming out this Christmas. The author, Laura Hillenbrand, is a Lyme patient.
Very good detox for the eyes, payne!

This is a beautiful story, and I did need a hankie! We sure do need more heroes like him. Thanks for sharing this.
How you doing these days? I am holding my own, albeit, Lyme arthritis is still a problem. I've been rifing for maintenance, but I got lazy for a few years because I was doing okay, but now I'm back on a weekly rife schedule.
