So Mayo Clinic has found a new strain of Borrelia and named it after itself, lol. They say that the new strain is "emerging" in the upper midwest ( think Northern Wisconsin/Minnesota) and causes Lyme.
What's interesting about this is that there are also some other strains "emerging." So WHY are they emerging? Why are they emerging now?
Is it just me or does it seem to you that we've got a whole lot of "emerging" infectious diseases popping up lately?
Patients infected with B. mayonii will test positive for Lyme disease with currently available U.S. Food and Drug Administration-cleared Lyme disease tests
And please don't forget:
" The CDC recommends that health care providers who are caring for patients infected with B. mayonii also follow the antibiotic regimen described by the Infectious Diseases Society of America."
Im sure they are right....

At first when I saw this, I thought it was one that was being found in mayonnaise!
Thanks for the info, Jordana - I'm thinking they should be careful about this, since there are a lot of other genospecies out there in the world and they should be checking to see if this matches any of them.

TWO people out of over 25,000 members here have had a positive Lyme test from the Hold The Mayo Clinic, or heard of someone who did. 2/25,000 ONLY TWO!!!
One person (hambone), and the results were kept from hambone and treatment wasn't provided.
The second person, nefferdun, heard about someone who tested positive.
That's it- TWO people!
And they have the nerve to name a spirochete after themselves after they've destroyed so many lives and people have died from being misdiagnosed there??
PIGS!
Since only 6 of 9,000 samples tested positive for this supposed "new" strain they discovered, my bet is it isn't a new strain, it's simply...
CONTAMINATION.
Probably one of the worker's BBQ sandwiches they had for lunch got mixed in there when a piece of it fell from their shirt onto the lab table.
May I suggest a name for their big discovery- and we should write and tell them....

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
What irritates me is that the PR from that place makes it sound like they're so far ahead of the curve with Lyme that they're already on to the next problem.
When in fact they are the original problem.

Combine with Master's Lyme and you have non-Bbss that extends from Texas up through to Canada.

I tested positive for Lyme via Mayo Clinic's lab. But the ID doctor (not at Mayo) who ordered the test told me it was "cross reacting with something else," and "false positive" because I was not in Oregan, and he seemed to indicate that ticks infected with Lyme turn around at the border.
When I asked what it was cross-reacting with, he could not give me an answer...

Just saw this today on facebook and could only roll my eyes. My inner cynic thinks that Mayo and the CDC have failed Lyme patients so miserably that now in the face of so much irrefutable evidence that Borrelia burgdorferi is not the easy cure they say it is, they come up with a new strain...and name it after themselves.
By claiming discovery and therefore "ownership" of this "new" disease, they get to control it. Let's see if they stick with IDSA guidelines or if they plan to use it as a way to "save face" and concede that it's a bit tougher to treat than originally thought.

They have already said IDSA rules on treatment should still be followed.

Goodness - according to IDSA I should have been cured 100 times over. I did two weeks of antibiotics about 50 times.
That is after the useless tests missed every single band every single time I was tested at Labcorp and Quest. For the past twenty years.
You know - the CDC recommended tests - for only one strain and leaving out important bands.
IIRC their latest on testing is only with a positive Elisa can the Western Blot be performed.
What next? Maybe an announcement that the Advanced Laboratory Services Bb culture tests were not contaminated after all? Maybe we'll hear about that if we live long enough.
I cry "Balonii"

Since the Mayo doesn't find Lyme with their own illustrious tests, and Tincup's right, we are talking two people out of zillions, how could Mayo possibly find 900 people positive for Lyme even tho they looked in three states?
And if they were gathering all these blood samples to test, don't you think someone in WI or MN would have spilled the beans? OR they used better tests (not theirs) to find all the positives? If that's the case, whose test(s)and where did the blood come from?
I think I smell a rat that ate the cheese from my Balonii sandwich.
