Somebody took a call for me last Thursday or so while I was outside,,,said the person says its IMPERATIVE I call this number back by Monday at the latest.
No name,no info WHO it was just a phone number and a case number to refer them to ME!!!
I called them back at this number Monday,,,message said from 8 to 8 pm any day. They wanted my birthday and ss number to 'verify' it was ME calling.
I asked how I could be sure thats who WAS calling and NOT scamming. She said I could call my telephone company and verify it was the IRS I was talking to. (Slick trick when already on the phone, after their biz hours anyway!!) They know you arent going to,,,PLUS dont think phone company would give out that info anyway!!
How would you know IF there phone line was taken out with some company name with IRS intials and wouldnt show to MY phone company,,,just says IRS,, YEP must be right!!
Said I had a balance due on my 2003 and 2004 returns,,,but wouldnt tell me more without my personal info I wasnt comfy sharing just yet. I always heard the IRS DOESNT call you anyway!!
Why havent I gotten ANY paper notices on these by now?? She said I will NOW!!!It was just a courtesy call. IF this has been going on so long and JUST a courtesy call,,,why did I HAVE to call by Monday??
IF I offered to pay it over the phone with like a card info, bet they would TAKE it!! It just seems fishy to me all the way around. Was this a PHISHING scheme or the real deal?? Would "YOU" give them your birthday and ss #(when obviously they already HAVE that!!)???
I guess IF I get paper notices then I KNOW it may have been real,,,but if I never hear further must be phony!! Does the IRS really give "courtesy " calls!!??? A new one on --just don--

SCAM!
They just send me a bill with a letter of explanation and a number to call or address to write to if I want to protest.

SCAM!!!
Just last month we got a bill in the mail from the IRS concerning our 2005 taxes. It stated what our error was and how much more we owed. There was a phone number to call if we had any questions...

If you still have the phone number, call the police number with it. Maybe the scammers can be caught.

Good catch Don.
They don't call. They will send letters, seizure notices, etc.
But they don't extend a courtesy call.

IRS and courtesy call don't belong in the same sentence!
Another vote for SCAM!

It would seem that the IRS would just need the last 4 digits of your SS#. She would have had your file right in front of her face. How many Just Don's are there with the exact same last 4 digits on their SS# at the same phone number and address?
I just don't think the IRS would choose to make phone calls to everyone w/discrepancies. Sending out notices would probably be much more efficient for an agency dealing with millions of people.

Well to end the mystery,,,it was for real.
Got ONE registered letter demanding a whooping 80 bucks and a few cents. Expecting another cause ladt SAID there was 2 years involved.
How do you ascertain that you really owe this after 3-4 years of waiting and 'forgetting' how this all transpired?
AND why would they NOT have sent out a past due notice before this?? This notice says LAST chance before collection(hard core). What happened to first chance??
At the time right away your NEVER know if it just crossed in the mail. No further notice and you think all is well.
So I guess the rule is IRS "MAY" make courtesy calls!! I had a sneaky hunch this was true cause AFTER I posted this first time,,,I googled the number I had to call,,,came back as IRS sure nuff!!
Still wouldnt want to do credit card or payments over the phone with them!! They cant keep themselves straight, how would they without a paper trail?? Thanks,,,still smelled scamy to me!!! being--just don--

Phisherpersons-- NO QUESTION!! SCUMbags! T'hats exactly the thing to do, tell them you won't give ANY info over the phone! Tell them you need a registered letter or something of the sort. And get on the "do not call registry"-- then they are BREAKING THE LAW! (that's why they usually try it via e-mail) DaveS
