No one thought about the porn-STD-neuro-syphilis possibility? Or something akin to this? Tons of viruses & microbes have a proclivity for nervous tissue -- especially the brain.
Just stating the facts, though no one can say what this character's pathology really is...

I work in "The Biz" and worked with Charlie for a day about 10 years ago. He didn't look good. He was fat, watery, bloated. The next day it was on the news that he was hauled off to rehab later that afternoon.
Then, about 6 years ago, I worked with him again where he was let out of another rehab stint for half a day to do an interview with Charlie Rose. I was there when he walked into his house for the first time in 6 months. He just stared and looked around, like a stranger. (It was a bachelor house with a BLACK den, neon, a full bar, pinball machines, etc.) Now that I see this thread, I realize it was in a location where, if he ever left his house's bar, he could encounter ticks. It was next door to Malibu, a hotspot for Lyme.
OTOH, I've worked with Martin Sheen a number of times, and he's one of the funniest people I've ever met, but he had his demons too. Almost died from a coronary on Apocalypse Now -- induced by serious drugging. So there is likely a genetic component. I am sure he's both heartbroken and disgusted with Charlie right now.
I've worked with Martin's other son, Emilio Estevez, too, a very nice guy and family man who is low-key and unassuming. But we never hear about him, do we? No colorful pathology there, so he doesn't make the news. I hope he's working.
Love, kindness, compassion, concern, etc, don't play well on TV. Those emotions are like watching grass grow, and you can't get sponsors to pay for that. TV must have drama(the more pathology, the better), action to entrain the eye/brain, and have all that take place inside of the lower emotions, tossing in a minute or two of higher emotion every once in a while just to keep the women on board. It's all about eyeballs! Gotta have something that keeps your attention long enough to get you to the commercials, because that's why television exists: to sell to you. Forget the other stuff.
I don't watch it. It IS all smoke and mirrors, of which I am a part, and THAT is where the fun is. When I get home, I'd rather read a book.

Martin Sheen's birth name was Martin Estevez. His mother's maiden name was Sheen. When he went into acting, lo these many years ago, he knew he wasn't going to get any work with the last name of Estevez, so he changed it. Charlie was born Carlos Estevez. Emilio Estevez wanted to keep his hispanic surname, Charlie didn't.

Something's certainly wrong with him- talking about being a dragon and a God and such. He's completely delusional. My guess is that he's unknowingly seriously bipolar and is in a state of off the charts hyper-mania. But he seems to be even worse than that- like maybe he has a touch of schizophrenia. You would think, though, that his family would have recognized that a long time ago and insisted on help. But who knows, it may be the deep dark family secret that they've tried to keep hidden from the public. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be in the same room as that man, he's scary. He needs help and I hope he gets it.

I suspect he's long blown-off his birth family. They organized an intervention that made the news a long time ago; obviously did not work. I'd bet the farm on that his family has been trying to help him in every way possible, but it's way beyond that now.
Ironically, today I'm working on a commercial for a VETERINARY anti-Lyme product; cheaper competitor to whatever it is you put on the back of your dog's neck. When I drove up to offload my gear, the Lyme Disease bumper sticker on the back of my car made everyone think I was the client! I got a GREAT parking space!
