Well, I think they say to avoid foods like chocolate, tomatoes and other acidic stuff, mint, things like that.
Someone on here mentioned apple cider vinegar to heal GERD. I always mean to try that and never get around to getting the right kind of vinegar.

If you try the ACV, use Bragg's. It has the "mother" and it's supposed to be the best.
What I did for GERD, since I didn't want to take Prilosec the rest of my life, is sleep a little propped up. I take about 3 or 4 pillows and sleep more at an angle. Not the best for back or neck, but I've found it helps with GERD and sinuses. I'm wondering why his stomach hurts. Throat pain and chest pain, yes, but stomach? Or, sleep in a recliner. My GERD went away with treatment but I still sleep at an angle since I've found it just makes me feel better.

The Xymogen product called GlutAloeMine has helped me a lot with providing nutrients for the esophagus to heal from all that acid eating it up.
Of course, finding a way to make the digestion work better is necessary for a long-term solution (whether that's ACV or lyme treatment or whatever), but the GlutAloeMine can play a nice supportive role.
One warning about it, though, it contains glutamine which apparently can help cause seizures for those with neurological issues, so one needs to evaluate that risk. (I heard about that possibility after I had been using the product for a long time, so the decision was easy for me to continue, as it is so helpful for me.)

Reflux can be caused by EITHER low stomach acid OR high stomach acid. Most docs don't test to differentiate between the two.
I have low stomach acid and supplement with Thorne Biogest, which has HCL and other ingredients. It also helps my two daughters who get reflux. It's all natural.
Apple cider vinegar wasn't enough in my case, but my daughter has used it.

Sorry to hear about your son's suffering. It's a good idea to deal with it naturally and soon, since chronic inflammation can lead to so many other issues, including malabsorption of nutrients, and food sensitivities or allergies.
I have an herbal tea recipe that basically cured my GERD and stomach ulcer/h. pylori problem. Between that and removing foods that I had become sensitive to, the symptoms are basically gone for good, unless I eat an offending food, and even then the symptoms are fleeting and relatively minor compared to before.
If you'd like the recipe, please PM me so that I will remember to post it for you. I am asking my husband to rewrite it since we have made some changes to the recipe to make it easier. If your son also is fighting Lyme, I'll give you the recipe that includes Lyme detox ingredients.
You'll want to have him drink it twice a day, morning and night. If he is taking any meds, he should have the tea an hour or two away from his med dosing schedule.
The tea is made from herbs you can buy affordably from online sources, in bulk and organic or wild-crafted for best effectiveness. I can give you some links to suppliers we like if you are interested.

Thank you all for your posts...I have given him some ACV but too early to tell if it is helping. I really wonder if soy sauce could be a problem...he eats it with a lot of foods b/c he can't tolerate ketchup.
Nenet - I would love your tea recipe...will send you a pm!
Thanks,

I've read recently (on these boards I think) that soy sauce has something in it that you don't want. Keebler would know.
What about honey mustard or home made ranch dressing?

That's how I am too. My upper stomach hurts a lot lately in addition to the GERD sx.

This test does that... see for yourself.

I would definitely eliminate the soy sauce, or at least cut it down to see if that helps. Braggs makes a great soy sauce alternative called Braggs Liquid Aminos. It is delicious.
It is gluten free and non fermented. It is strong so you have to dilute it.

Tick battler, is he sensitive to wheat? Most soy sauce is made from wheat.

momlyme - Thanks for the info about the acid test!
glm - I will look into that...sounds interesting. Is it made from soy?
My son uses organic Tamari, which is wheat free soy sauce. He has had a wheat allergy in the past. I just think it could be too strong for his stomach right now. We shall see if eliminating it helps.
