im now 8 days into the lyme infection, and 7 days into 400mgs of doxy a day. im feeling so tired, i can hardly think, shorterm memory gone to the dogs... basically total fatigue. is this the doxy or the lyme? my EM rash has totally gone... wish i didnt have to take any more pills.. i run a computer company, and its getting harder. i know, compared with many of you, im in a good position, - as im getting it early.. spose the reality is biting a bit.. all i want to do is reduce this dose! but i know i cant.
if it is the lyme, how can it live whilst having this quantity of doxy in my blood? it must be a hardy bastard.

Angus, This sounds like a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, unfondly known to us as herx. This is the body's response to toxins released by dead and dying bacteria. An herbal tea whose primary ingredient is dandelion root helps me with this. However, I'm not familiar with the treatment of new infections causing herxes. I hate to even ask this, but is there a possibility you have had this longer? Have you looked over the Lyme symptom checklist? When I first did, I had thirty-six out of thirty-eight symptoms mentioned. David

I know what you are going through, I am only taking 200 mg of doxy a day. I have been taking doxy since June 22nd and about the 8th to 10th day I got real weak, hurt all over worse than normal ran a HIGH fever and just felt like crap all OVER. I called my doctor and she added another 2 weeks of the doxy and I thought the doxy was killing me! She said that could be a sign the doxy was doing what it was suppose to be doing! I am just now beginning to feel a little better. I took a one day break from the doxy and the fever broke and I am doing better. Kind of broke the cycle I guess. I don't know a lot about lyme I am new to it but I can share my reaction to doxy and let you know it happens and my doctor said that is a good thing. Hang in there they say it gets better. Hang in there! Just remember, you will feel so much better once you get thru this herx!
Drink lots of water to try to flush your system and get plenty of rest. I haven't tried the dandelion tea, but have heard it really works well. Epsom salt baths have also been suggested to me.
Be very careful with the sun while taking these high doses of Doxy. I was on 400 mg and had bad sun poisoning. You don't need that on top of everything else!

Thanks everyone - you were right. I drank 3 litres and went to bed - feel really good today! I thought it was my reaction to the doxy, but obviously not - all the symptoms must have been from dead bacteria..
all the best to you all..

Hi Angus, I am really glad you are feeling better. Please don't be shocked or dismayed if the herx continues or returns. In fact, if you change your antibiotics at all you will probably experience another herx, as i recently found out when i went off DOXY and onto Zithromax/Omnicef for the summer (I got a few nasty reactions to the sun).
The good ol' Herx can take you by surprise if you're not aware of it and lead you to think you are getting sicker.
