O.K. Ready for a joke? This is how lichens originally came to be. (They are made up of algae and fungi that grow together in a symbiotic relationship).
Way back in prehistoric times an algae climbed up one side of the rock, a fungus climbed up the other side of the rock. They got to the top and took a "lichen" to each other.
